Every day, countless undocumented immigrants and illicit goods make their way across the borders of the United States, and the federal government relies upon border patrol agents to do everything in their power to limit the number of aliens that make it into the country. While the vast majority of these illegal immigrants are hard working individuals who cross the border in search of a better life for themselves and their families, the fact of the matter is that the United States government and economy is only designed to provide protection and support for the actual citizens of this country. Let's take a look at the job duties of US Border Patrol agents and how their service protects the rights of our nation's citizens. While the daily assignments of an border patrol agent can vary a great deal depending on the geographical region that an agent is protecting, nearly all border patrol agents have the same primary job duties. The job duties of a border patrol agent are centered around the surveillance of the nation's borders through a wide variety of technological equipment and traditional police work. In many cases, a border patrol agent spends the majority of his or her day monitoring the border using equipment such as security cameras, night vision scopes and aircraft. In other regions, it is the duty of a border patrol agent to thoroughly inspect vehicles as they cross the border or to apprehend, detain and process individuals who are attempting to enter the country illegally. Some of the most exciting work performed by agents with Border Patrol jobs occurs out in the field. Many border patrol agents spend the majority of their workday physically patrolling the border on the lookout for criminal behavior. These agents also follow up on intelligence gathered by other border patrol agents who are monitoring the border with various surveillance equipment. Although being a border patrol agent can sometimes feel like a thankless job, a border patrol agent's job duties are incredibly important to ensuring national security.
