Fungi belongs to the large group of eukaryotic organisms that can be found almost anywhere on earth, including the human body. Fungi comprise microorganisms such as yeast, mushroom and molds. There are almost 50,000 kinds of fungi and about a dozen of it is known to cause illnesses to humans, sinusitis fungal infections. These fungi coexist in our body along with other microorganisms in a natural balance. However, fungi can sometimes result to minor infections, and even life-threatening ones. When certain fungi cause the sinuses to inflame, the condition is known as a sinusitis fungal infection . Sinusitis fungal infection is due to comprise debilitated immune system and an allergic reaction to the fungi. Fungal sinusitis is divided into 4 categories including: * Fungal Ball - this is due to the overgrowth of fungal elements in the maxillary sinus or the cheek. The fungi responsible for such condition belong to the Aspergillus family which is known as a common bread mold. People suffering from this kind of infection usually have a history of recurrent sinusitis. Sufferers may experience blockage of fungus in their sinuses, however, no bone destruction is involved. Fungal ball infection can be treated by removing the fungal ball from the sinuses to eliminate sinusitis fungal infections. * Allergic Sinusitis Fungal Infection - this condition is caused by fungi that belong to Dematiaceous family which is quite common in the environment. Nasal polyps and thick drainage is present and the treatment involves removal of fungal elements from the sinus to be able to re-establish the sinus drainage. Compared to fungal ball, the recurrence of this sinusitis fungal infection is higher due to allergic components involved in such condition. Patient's suffering from this type of fungal sinusitis may also experience sinus blockage, occasional bone destruction and bone thinning, which is why intermittent surgical management will be required, along with lifelong medical attention. * Chronic and Acute Sinusitis Fungal Infection - these types of infection are the least common yet the most deleterious type of sinus infection. Acute type sinusitis is where the fungus grows deep into the sinus tissues and bones. The chronic type, on the other hand, may be similar to the acute one but the spread of the infection is much slower. People who are susceptible to these infections are those who have weak immune system particularly those who have uncontrolled diabetes and those who have undergone chemotherapy. Those who suffer from chronic-type sinusitis fungal infection are individuals who have normal immune system. This infection is often due to mold spores and dead tissues are visible on examination. This condition also develops sinus blockage, bone destruction and swelling of the affected areas. Chronic sinusitis is often fatal and requires both anti-fungal medication and surgery.
