The fruit of the orchid has a long thin shape that resembles a green bean, thus earning this great commodity its name vanilla bean. This vanilla orchid generally grows in a hot climate. The dark brown vanilla bean is usually seven to nine inches long and weighs about five grams. It can yield about half a teaspoon of seeds of seeds when the bean pod is opened and scraped. Many fine chefs say that only a quarter teaspoon of these seeds is enough to add great vanilla flavor to any recipe aimed at serving roughly four or five people.

The bean can be fermented in alcohol in order to create vanilla extract which is normally used for pastries and other baked goods as well as candies. But some even add it to coffee and warm tea or hot cocoa. This powerful sweet flavor has been used for centuries. Today there are many corporations that produce a synthetic version of this great natural flavor and these are sold in most major grocery stores. In addition, several other items can be created using the bean such as vanilla paste, powder and sugar.

Having all these choices for that beautiful vanilla flavor and aroma can make it confusing and a little hard to choose which version of vanilla you prefer and would like to purchase. Bear in mind regardless of which version of vanilla you select, you should be certain it is pure and real vanilla and not an imitation.

When the product isn't legitimate, it has a different flavor and smell. There tuly is no substitute for the real thing. There are actually 150 different types of the vanilla plant, but just two of these are popular in the market - Tahitian and Bourbon Madagascar vanilla beans – each having it’s own distinct flavor and cooking properties.

Making vanilla extract from these beans is performed by slicing the vanilla beans and fermenting them with the usage of ethyl alcohol and water. It is very important to always keep the blend cool during the process to avoid any loss of flavor. It will take roughly 48 hours for the alcohol to seep the flavor from the bean. But the extract should remain sealed and given about 4 months to complete the fermentation process. However, instead of waiting the four months it takes to create your own extract, you can certainly purchase it at a specialty store or even online.

There are some companies that produce vanilla extract and allow it to age naturally over a period of two years or more in order for the extract to reach a certain flavor before they permit the product to be sold. And what's great is that extract can be stored indefinitely, so long as it is kept in a cool dark place like within your cupboard, so you can feel free to purchase it to have on hand even if you seldom cook. Refrigerating vanilla extract isn't advised. There are some people who are more inclined to use an extract that is not based on alcohol. For these folks, many specialty stores stock natural vanilla flavor. However, the vanilla flavor you can find in your favorite grocery store contains artificial substances like vanillin and it is not all natural.

There are actually a good number of common brands that contain a mix of natural and artificial vanilla flavor. But using real, all-natural vanilla extract will supply the best flavor and scent for all of your recipes that call for this ingredient. If you and your family are used to using the flavoring that can be found at the grocery store, then you'll be so pleasantly surprised when you switch to the all-natural pure product. Artificial extracts frequently leave a lingering after taste while pure extracts have a more powerful aroma and never leave a displeasing after taste. The flavor is smooth, extraordinarily pleasurable and unequalled when referring to preparing your favorite recipes.
