If you think that you are going to make millions from video game jobs, then you need to think again. I hate to sound pessimistic or to burst your bubble, but this is one of the most hyped jobs on the internet and quite frankly most sites just plain lie about it. The reality of games testing is not what you think it is.

If you think that you are going to be a video games tester for PlayStation3 testing the latest God Of War, then you are living an illusion. Yes, its true that there are video game jobs for these big name companies but unless you have a lot of experience and a lot of talent you probably won't see these jobs for a long time. In truth, you will probably have to build your career testing small games and work your way up in the industry.

The pay is also hugely over inflated. If you think you are going to start off earning $100k per year, then think again. The top testers do make big bucks, but its only a very select few that make that kind of money. Expecting $50-$100 per hour is probably much more realistic and keep in mind that you probably won't have a steady stream of video game jobs when you first start out. You will soon find out that just getting jobs is a challenge in itself.

I would suggest that you get a foot in the door as soon as possible. It can be a slow and cumbersome climb to the top. Like any sought after career the competition is tough and unless you have something special to bring to the table you won't stand out. One of best things you can do to get into testing is to find a mentor and learn quickly. It is a very exciting career and it has huge possibilities - especially when you get involved in development and design. Don't get carried away by pipe dreams and don't be discouraged either. If you love games then this is a career for you, but you will have to work hard and stay focused.

One of the best way to start building a reputation in this industry is plain and simple: become very good! With countless gaming tournaments both online and offline you can quickly build a name for yourself and in this industry having a name is everything. Not only will it land you a lot more video game jobs, but it will get your name out to all the right people.
