Want to make the most from your first impression?
Written by Ronald Sukenick
Making the most of a first impression is more than important-It is crucial. Making the most of your initial 47 seconds with each new contact is actually your development of a quick introduction of yourself and a quick shift to who they are and what you can do to help them.
In this issue you will find useful tips that will help you make the most from your first interaction with others. Just like becoming a great networker, making the most from your first interaction with others is a serious and studied commitment that will continually place constant demands on you.
Networking strategy # 5: Becoming a 47-Second Networker
Business Cards: Business cards are perhaps the most misused and abused networking tool that we have. Most of us opt for one of the printer's standard formats; just to save ten dollars. Little thought goes into the design and purpose. Business cards are intended to be an ongoing form of advertisement; therefore, careful thought and preparation should be undertaken for maximum effectiveness. Think of your business card as a mini billboard. You should let the world know who you are and what you do. A well-designed business card will be just as effective as a billboard along the highway, if you use it correctly. Make it say what's important to your potential clients.
The Active Presentation: To make the most of your first 47 seconds, you must present yourself as an active (versus passive) person with an active (versus passive) product. When you meet someone for the first time, give him or her a solid explanation of what you have to offer. Present yourself or your company in an active manner.
Elements of an Active Presentation: An effective opening presentation is the key to a successful first impression. An active presentation should consist of:
- Your name
- Your business, profession or what you want to accomplish.
- A brief, active description of what you do.
Because the potential of an active description can be very powerful, you should regularly evaluate your own description to ensure its maximum impact.
Great Tip: After you meet someone and offer your presentation, quickly shift from who you are to who they are. This enables them to become active. This action makes them feel good about who they are and points out the fact that you are interested in them, which draws them back to you. In essence, act like a host. Take an active interest in whom you meet and how you might be able to help them. Listen closely to who they are and what their needs are.
In Summary
Make the most of your first 47 seconds. Make a good impression by presenting yourself and your product or company in an active manner. This type of presentation stimulates those you meet and gives them an opportunity to evaluate how you can help them right there, on the spot.
