Waste-to-energy, Cleans Up and Energize Us
Written by D. Perez
Waste-to-energy process enhances our fuel and oil independence. The advancement in waste management technology is not only for cleaning up our trash but it also provides us with electricity and fuel. Gasification is one of the waste-to-energy procedures that provide us with an environment-friendly process and product. Since the waste materials used for gasification is almost every kinds of trash, it is easier to process than other waste-to-energy procedure. Actually, there are gasifiers that can be used at home for cooking and lighting. Biomass gasification is one type of gasification that is said to be easily available because the waste material needed is almost everywhere. Residues from agriculture like wood scraps can be used in biomass gasification as well as paper and yard wastes in the community can be included in the process. Methane and other poisonous gases that can be found in landfills can also be converted to electricity thru gasification.
Waste-to-energy provides consumers an option in the type of energy that they want to use. Like biomass gasification, it has the greatest potential for electric power consumption since the waste material needed can be easily acquired. It can provide economically competitive fuel that can be used for transportation and providing electricity to power plants. Waste-to-energy will serve best its economic purpose for the countries if the facilities will be built in the source of waste materials. For biomass gasification, waste-to-energy plants can be based in rural areas where agriculture lands are located. Since feedstocks and crops are grown in farms, transportation cost will be less if the waste materials are already within the area. Also, the fuel that can be produced from the gasification process can be utilized by the farmers to be used in their agricultural machineries. People in the community will have more employment and farmers will have higher income because of waste-to-energy products.
One of the great things that waste-to-energy provides in the environment is that it reduces greenhouse gas emissions which make our earth a healthy and clean planet. It can also start a campaign to continue growing crops in agricultural land instead of converting it to residential and commercial units. This will improve wildlife habitat, reduce erosion, soil carbon will be restored and lessen the risk of chemical runoff. Waste-to-energy is an environment-friendly waste management procedure which we can rely on because it will not just clean up our mess but can also provide us lights in our houses and fuel to cook our food.
