Many women spend years trying to NOT get pregnant. But when they decide the time is right to start a family impatience sets in and they want it to happen as quickly as possible.

So that’s the question, how to get pregnant faster?

Here are some sensible suggestions.

Stop using birth control

It can vary greatly how long it takes a woman’s body to get back into a healthy, normal cycle after taking contraceptives. Women need to be aware that pregnancy might not happen quickly.

Taking hormonal contraceptives — birth control pills, hormone injections — might result in the woman taking a longer time to get pregnant.

Barrier methods (condoms, caps, diaphragms etc), have no readjustment time. Nor do implanted contraceptives, such as an IUD, but they need to be removed by a GP.

Know your body

If you have regular menstrual cycles, you can estimate when you ovulate by dividing your cycle in half. For example, if your period usually lasts 28 days, you will likely ovulate around day 14 of your cycle (14 days after your period starts).

Or you can use an ovulation calculator on a baby website to work it out for you.

Take your temperature.

A woman’s temperature rises slightly when she is ovulating, so it can be used as a fertility indicator.

You’d have to track your temperature regularly each day for some time so you will notice a change as we are only talking about a rise of between 0.5 and 1 degree Fahrenheit for less than a day.

Check your mucus

When a woman is fertile her vaginal discharge changes to clear and stretchy, like raw egg whites. Have sex daily for three to five days from the day you noticed this consistency change. Once it becomes cloudy and drier ovulation has passed.

Have sex often

The obvious answer to “how to get pregnant” is to have lots of sex. A woman’s egg is viable for about 24 hours, but sperm can survive for up to a week in the fallopian tubes. So don’t get too hung up on dates. Have sex every other day to really optimise your chances of getting pregnant.

Orgasms help

The intense spasmodic pleasure of an orgasm is your internal muscles drawing your partner’s sperm up into the cervix so orgasms can help sperm travel further, faster.

Lose weight

Overweight women generally struggle more to conceive. Have your BMI checked and if it is too high try dieting and exercising before getting pregnant. It will reduce your risks of complications during pregnancy too.

Gain weight

Women who are clinically underweight (with a BMI under 18.5) might stop menstruating altogether, and have difficulty conceiving.

Watch your diet

There are foods which can actually boost fertility in men and women. Check a good baby website or book for lots of dietary information.

Stop bad habits

Smoking and drinking alcohol can affect fertility in men and women. Both are potentially harmful to an unborn baby too.
