Having spent a lot of time in the weight loss forums I know there are a lot of young people out there who have a real problem with their weight.

Being overweight as a teenager can be a very difficult thing to deal with. What with all the different images we see around regarding the beautiful body, there is a lot of pressure on all of us but especially the young to be a certain shape and size. I want to use this page to give some practical help and advice for young people, Weight Loss For Teens.

Before we go on I would like to share a remarkable story of a college student named Jared Fogle. (Those of you in the US may well know of Jared and his story)
Jared had a serious weight problem. By his junior year in college he had ballooned to 425 pounds. He wore size XXXXXXL shirts, the largest size available in big and tall clothing stores. His trousers had a 60-inch waist.

Jared’s father, a GP in Indianapolis, had been warning his son about his weight for years without much success. One day Jared was diagnosed with Edema, a condition in which the body retains fluid because the blood can’t transport enough liquid; it often leads to diabetes, heart problems, and even early heart attacks. Jared’s father told him that, given his weight and general health, he might not live past thirty-five.

Following one of many hospital visits, Jared decided he had to slim down and promptly walked through the door of the nearest Subway Restaurant, he had his first turkey club. He liked the sandwich and eventually he developed his own, all-Subway diet: a foot-long veggie sub for lunch and a six-inch turkey sub for dinner.

After three months of the Subway diet as he called it, he stepped on the scale. It read 330 pounds. He had dropped almost 100 pounds in 3 months by eating Subway. He stuck with the diet for several more months, sometimes losing as much as a pound a day. As soon as his health permitted, he began walking as much as he could-not taking the bus to class and even walking up stairs rather than taking the escalator of lift.

Now, by telling you this story... ...I’m not saying you should go out and start eating food from Subway, but what I am saying is that you don’t have to start with huge changes in the way you live your life and the things that you eat but to make small but significant changes like eating the healthier Subway sandwich as opposed to a Big Mac with all the trimmings and walking to class or work or getting off the bus a few stops earlier and walking the rest of the way.

It’s all about getting started but if you think that means giving up all the foods you love best, the chances are you won’t even get to start a weight loss and fitness program.

Take a good look at what you’re eating, write it down (keep a food journal) and as of tomorrow say to yourself right, I am going to change A for B. I won’t have fries with my burger anymore or I’m going to have water with my meal instead of a coke, I will swap biscuits for seedless grapes, white bread for wholemeal bread.

  • Go and weigh yourself and write it down. Make sure the scales are on a hard flat surface.
  • Write down what you would typically eat for the day and look at the list and say ok for this week I will make 5 food swaps and do that for 1 week.
  • Walk for at least 30 minutes a day, every day for that week.
  • Don’t drink any alcohol.
  • Then come back to the scales and see how much weight you’ve lost.

Make some small changes now and be amazed by the progress you can make even if it’s just 1 pound, it’s a great start because now you know that it works and it will continue to work and the more you do it the more weight you will lose.

Until one day you will be walking up the road and people you know won’t even recognise you. www.fab-weight-loss-program.com

Be good to yourself.
