Westoning lies about two miles to the north east of the M1 at Junction 12. So accessible and yet in a tucked away tranquil location, Westoning makes a perfect spot from which to tour the local area of Bedfordshire. The typically English village has a high street which contains a traditional village butcher, a post office and a newsagent. A recreation ground contains a children's play park and the village has two pubs: The Chequers and The Bell public houses which make great meeting places for locals and visitors alike. The village also has a well attended social club. Just outside the village on the Flitwick Road is the Flitvale Garden Centre which is a popular spot for local gardeners. Westoning is proud of its community and recreational facilities include the local amateur dramatic society, the football club, the tennis club and the many social events that are held throughout the year such as country dancing. There is a fund raising Donkey Derby held annually and the Recreation Club is host to real ale festivals which are especially popular! Other events include a church fete and summer fete which are held in the vicarage grounds and recreation ground. Westoning is the subject of much legend including an execution and a miracle. This tale, which dates back to the 13th century, tells of a local farmer who refused to pay his debt to a neighbour. In a drunken state, the neighbour seized a number of the farmer's possessions and was subsequently tried and found guilty. He was left at the roadside and had his eyes gouged out. However, after several days of prayer, his eyes grew back and he was a reformed man. The story has obviously become altered and exaggerated throughout the centuries but still makes a good tale in the local pubs. Westoning is especially popular with walkers because there are numerous footpaths taking people through the lovely local countryside through woods and farms. Visitors to the area are pleasantly surprised by the tranquillity of the area much of which has been deemed Green Belt and consequently is safe from development. Five miles from Westoning is Woburn Abbey, home to the Dukes of Bedfordshire for over three hundred years and still home to the fifteenth Duke. The Leighton Buzzard Railway with its restored steam engines offers delightful journeys evocative of a time past and is only seven miles from Westoning. Children are given activity sheets and a trip on the railway makes a great day out. Whipsnade Zoo is a short driving distance away and is fun for all the family. The nearby Chiltern Hills are now home to the once endangered red kite. These spectacular birds can be seen regularly flying above the hills and gliding high above the glorious landscape. There are sites of ancient monuments too. In fact the whole area is littered with things to see and do, both large and small and Westoning makes a great central point from which to see them all.
