What is a Virtual Assistant and What Do They Do?
Written by Marina Pal
A virtual assistant is a human assistant who works remotely while providing executive or administrative services to a client. The assistant may be from your country or located overseas. Communication is done via technology. With minimal supervision at the initial stage, you get an assistant to do many of the routine tasks for a price. They are trained to do their assigned tasks superbly.
What does a virtual assistant do?A virtual assistant, also called a remote assistant, is a remote administrative assistant or a virtual professional. They do a wide range of business-related tasks that can be performed virtually.
A virtual assistant can take sales calls, create content for your social media accounts and website, provide customer service, assist in managing clients or help with your company's marketing efforts. The assistant can be your personal assistant, secretary or administrative assistant. They can handle various routine tasks such as making and answering phone calls, schedule appointments, manage your email, do data entry or do social tasks.
Some virtual assistants have special skillsets so that they can perform business-specific jobs. Some of them may provide bookkeeping services. Others concentrate on conducting online research or produce presentations using the raw data the client provides. They are usually independent contractors. They can take on multiple clients at the same time.
Requirements to become a virtual assistantIf you are thinking of becoming a virtual assistant, you should know the requirements to become one.
It is not necessary to have a four-year degree course to become a virtual assistant, although a college degree gives you an advantage when you're looking for clients.
However, you need training. There are online training courses available from online educators or companies. You can enrol at a community college. Although not mandatory, several companies look for virtual assistants who are certified. To make it easier for you to land clients, it would be a good decision to be certified.
Competencies and skills requirements
Most of the skills you need as a virtual assistant are the same skills that a secretary or an administrative assistant needs.
- You need high-quality organizational skills to keep track of your clients' assignments.
- You are expected to have excellent communication skillsbecause you are working remotely, and your primary communication channels are phones and emails.
- You should know how to use different computer programs.
- A virtual assistant is not exclusive to one client. They can take on several clients, which is why they should know how to multitask. Likewise, they should learn time management, especially if they have multiple clients as they have new requests simultaneously.
The demand for the services of virtual assistants today is rising, especially due to the global movement to do most things online. The most popular administrative tasks right now are:
- Email management
- Customer service
- Calendar management
- Project management
- Online research
- Data entry
- Social media management
- Blog creation, email automation, and lead generation
Many clients are also looking for virtual assistants with technical skills, such as
- Webinar set up
- Website development
- Website SEO
- Social media page optimization
- Technical support and troubleshooting
- Graphic design
A virtual assistant works from home and sets their work hours. But do remember that it is better to be flexible since there may be times when you need to work weekends or evenings to finish a project for a client.
