What is expected is the unexpected in an interview:
Written by Veena
When a candidate prepares himself for an interview examination, he looks out for likely questions to be asked in the ensuing examination. He finds this clue on the basis of questions asked in earlier interviews. This is applicable for selection tests, competitive examinations, etc. This is also true for an interview also but with a slight difference in itself. Further, questions which are asked in an interview which is conducted after screening the candidate in selection examination/test differ widely from the questions which are asked in an interview where no such screening has taken place.
Generally, in an interview questions are asked on three aspects:
1) Informational Aspect.
2) Technical aspect
3) Behavioural aspect
Informational Aspect: what questions are expected on the informational aspect? There are two objectives of questions on the informational aspect. The first objective is to build rapport between interviewers (in case of panel interview in which there are many interviewers) and the respondent is the candidate. Except in the stress interview, this rapport is necessary. It is but obvious that candidates feel nervous when they enter the interview room. In such a situation, they cannot express themselves fully while the interviewers want to know full information including technical and behavioural aspects of the candidates to judge their overall suitability. Therefore it is obligatory on the part of interviewers to create a comfortable environment for the candidates. Generally, after exchanging greeting with the candidate, an interviewer (normally who is the chairman of the interview panel) studies the profile submitted by the candidate mentioned in the resume and formulates an allied set of questions to be posted in front of the candidate.
Technical Aspect: It revolves around the technical know-how and the core competencies of the candidate.
Behavioural aspect: It judges the temperament of the candidate and the response to stimuli which would be expected by the prospective employee in situations of pressure, stress and bottlenecks.
The frequently asked questions in an interview are enumerated herewith:
1) Tell us something about yourself?
2) Tell us something about your interests and hobbies?
3) We have identified gaps in your resume. What were you doing this time?
4) What are your strengths?
5) What are your weaknesses?
6) What is your most important accomplishment in your career till date?
7) How will you define your dream job?
8) What are your long term career goals?
9) Why We should hire you?
