Food is the fuel that our bodies need in order to operate efficiently and effectively. This means to say that before our body can use this fuel the food should be broken down into manageable pieces and further into absorbable materials that our body can use. This is where the human digestive tract becomes important.

The digestive tract will break down the food that we eat so that they will all become nutrients that are essential to the body’s physiologic functioning. It takes hours to fully digest and break down the food that we eat and this means hard work for the digestive system. There are a lot of processes that food should be broken down for example from protein to amino acids, fats into fatty acids and glycerol and starches or carbohydrates to simple sugars, among others.

The digestive tract is composed of the alimentary canal along with other abdominal organs used to digest the food like liver and pancreas. The alimentary canal is composed of the long tube around 30 feet long starting from the mouth to the anus.
