What is the Importance of Synchronous Permanent Magnets in Servo Motors?
Written by Sal D
Synchronous permanent magnets are a vital part in all synchronous devices, particularly servo motors. They are responsible for giving these devices a reliably constant speed and also enable the servo motor to keep a compact size, quiet operation and low cost. Synchronous permanent magnets are commonly used in machinery over a wide range of industries and applications, such as domestic appliances, printers of all sizes, precise industrial controls, medical equipment and computer equipment.
The permanent synchronous magnets in small devices serve a variety of purposes including providing high torque and holding the position of the device. Higher strength magnets result in electric devices with higher torque to suit a wide range of applications. The synchronous magnets can also be paired with geared mechanisms to allow for easier speed reduction and control. Synchronous permanent magnets are commonly used in servo motors of all sizes, from the smallest devices in toys to generators and industrial machines.
In industrial applications, permanent magnets fulfil two important roles. The first function of synchronous permanent magnets in large circuit systems is to efficiently convert AC electrical energy into mechanical power. The secondary function is to provide power-factor correction by operating at a leading power factor. The synchronous permanent magnets are used to transmit torque through magnetic forces within the electrical device and are therefore directly involved in the correct performance of the servo motor.
The magnets used in servo motors and other industrial applications are formed artificially, although in nature magnets can be found in a wide variety of different forms and chemical constitutions. The man made magnets used in servo motors are capable of holding their magnetism and charge for a very long time, causing them to be referred to as 'permanent.' Permanent magnets are most suited to smaller devices and are widely used in common electrical devices, including servo motors. Larger machines, such as turbo generators, generally use magnets with flowing charges to produce mechanical energy.
Synchronous permanent magnets are vital to ensuring a high efficiency and overload capabilities in many electric devices. Without functioning synchronous magnets, servo motors would not be able to operate at high speeds, high torque to inertia ratios, high power density or provide dynamic responses to inputs and mechanical loads. Asynchronous devices, on the other hand, are more suited to providing high power on main drives. These machines usually have a more heavy duty construction, with rigid bearings and the ability to carry heavy loads.
