What to do in case of a medical emergency
Written by Clifford Yurman
Certainly no one wants to face a medical emergency situation but unfortunately no one knows when he or she might have to face a medical emergency. There are several such incidences when you might need to approach a hospital quickly and cannot think of essentials. However, there are always some things which we can pick along or manage in advance to ensure quick treatment in case of emergency when we reach hospital. Here is some information what you should do in case of emergency.
Do Not Panic – It’s human to get panicked when we look at something unusual or unwanted situation. However the best thing in such situations is to allow our mind to take the charge instead of heart and look at the things in light of reality. If you panic, you will make a lot of commotion and will only delay the rescue work. Therefore, whenever there is an emergency, shun your fears, and take charge of the situation. Look at the damage, and what you can do as first-aid measure. If there is any bloodletting, you should try to stop blood flow first as it might make things worst later. In other cases make the patient/injured one comfortable. If you panic, the patient or the injured person will panic more which can make things worse. So you should try to behave normal.
Before rushing to hospital – its not always wise to rush the patient just anywhere. You should quickly think of which hospital has the required facilities and experts to do the right treatment. If you already know where to go, you should first inform the hospital about your arrival and patient’s situation on phone so that they will keep stretcher and other things ready to start treatment. In case patient is in critical situation, you should call for ambulance from the nearest hospital.
Insurance – We all have medical insurance. However, in such situations we often fail to carry our insurance papers/policies along which might further delay the treatment when you reach hospital. Therefore you should always keep insurance papers at a designated place and every member of the family should be aware of it. Just pick them quickly before moving the patient out so that to ensure quick treatment.
Walk-in facilities – Sometimes even large hospitals fail to accommodate emergency patients and a lot of time is wasted in running from one hospital to another. However there are some walk-in medical care centres in the town which require no pre-information of patient and guarantee of immediate treatment as you reach there. You should be aware of such walk-in medical facilities in your neighbourhood and should take the patient there first. They will be able to manage the things and avoid any complication and then patient can be shifted to larger hospital required.
Always remember the time is very critical factor in all emergency medical situations, hence you should try to access doctors and medical facilities as fast you can, but should do everything carefully lest situation might get worse.
