Written by Lora Davis
For those that may need to know, periodontic dentistry is a line of specialization is a line of dentistry that deal with the gum, bone and connective tissue that surrounds and supports your mouth; in general this is about everything that ensures that you teeth stay in place. Once they are done with the general dentistry course, periodontists will undertake another three more years in order to specialize. Experts in periodontic dentistry specialize in diagnosing and treating every disorder and disease of the supporting structure of the teeth in addition to periodontal medicine, dental implants and tooth replacement in general.
Periodontic dentistry deals with a wide array of gum diseases all of which have a single final outcome which is the loss of the teeth’s attachment to the gum, the connective tissue as well as bone to the teeth. A great majority of periodontal diseases come as a result bacterial biofilms that collect around the teeth in situations where there isn’t effective oral hygiene or a decrease in the strength of the body’s immune system. There are millions of people that present with beautiful smiles but they are not aware that they could be losing their periodontal attachment or the bones that support the teeth.
There are early warning signs that you need the services of periodontic dentistry that you can take note of even though in most cases gum disease is asymptomatic. One danger signal that is always ignored is some slight bleeding when someone brushes or flosses, a little inflammation and redness along the margins of the gum, bad breath and bad taste even though may other people don’t notice anything. The symptoms that are noticeable usually come last and they are easy to recognize; they include abscesses, loose or moving teeth and finally the loss of teeth.
Treatments that will be done with periodontic dentistry will be determined by the cause; this means that accurate diagnosis is important if proper treatment will be done; in most cases early to moderate periodontal diseases come with a single treatment objective. You want to learn the best way to deal with the biofilm or plaque at home whenever you brush or floss and make sure that you go for professional teeth cleaning every once in a while; the processes are known as scaling, root planing, or root debridement all of which will be done at your dentist’s office. However, when periodontal disease moves from moderate to advanced level treatment will include bite treatment or surgical treatment.
The best cause for periodontic dentistry begins with a visit to your general or family dentist who will check you out before they can refer you to a periodontal specialist when they feel that your condition warrants it or if the treatment you require goes beyond the scope of that particular dentist. If you met a family dentist who is able to practice some level of periodontic dentistry you must make sure that they use the same standards as a periodontist; you want to make sure that you are in safe hands if you accept that treatment.
