Consider that professional basketball players still engage in training; so that should tell you something about the value of training. It's possible to either under train or overtrain when it comes to basketball. Obviously, if you don't show up for practice sessions and only train occasionally, you will not be able to maintain the level of conditioning that this sport demands. While you have to train hard, you need your rest which will allow your body to recover and heal from all the strenuous exercise. Yes, of course we are talking about adequate sleep for recovery.

We all have different sleep requirements, but generally speaking you need about eight hours per night. You should also not do the same type of training, such as weight lifting, two days in a row. Take your basketball training seriously, but make sure your body has time to recover as well.

While stamina and endurance is important when it comes to basketball training, you also have to focus on strength training. You need muscles that are strong and flexible to stay competitive in basketball. Many of the plays you make during a game require explosive movements, and this demands strength as well as speed and agility. You need strength in your legs to improve your vertical jump. Weight lifting exercises such as squats and leg presses will improve your leg strength. You should do a complete strength training workout at least three times per week as part of your regimen. Strength training keeps you competitive and it also makes your muscles less prone to being injured.

You should create a definite schedule for your basketball training, as this ensures you will train regularly. You have to approach your training seriously, which means a consistent schedule, not simply training when you're in the mood for it. It's easier to stick to your training when you know exactly what you're supposed to be doing at what time. Unless there's an emergency or you're seriously ill, you should make it a point to train when you plan to. Just as important as how you train is whether or not you are consistent about your basketball training.

If you've chosen to play basketball, you have to recognize that it's a tough sport that requires lots of training. In order to compete in this rigorous sport, you have to be in top condition.
