When Corrosion is a Concern, Choose a Fiberglass Tank

Where corrosion is a prime concern, the use of a fiberglass tank is always advisable. Before we talk about the attributes and advantages of such tanks, it is important that we gain a brief overview about fiberglass as a material. This is also referred to as glass reinforced plastic or GRP. This modern composite material is long lasting, sturdy and does not corrode like its metal counterparts. It can be fabricated in several different shapes and densities, which is why it is suitable for making tanks as well as for construction purposes.

If made using best practices, such tanks can prove to be stronger than even steel tanks. In many cases, these tanks are also supplemented with a liner that adds to their leak-protection abilities. Huge cylindrical steel molds are used for this purpose, because they provide a hard and smooth surface.

The cylindrical molds are rotated at a constant angle and speed to uniformly apply the materials that will constitute the final tank. This process is computer controlled to a great extent, even as materials such as resin, glass and treated silica are applied to the mold. Once the desired thickness of the tank has been achieved throughout the body, this process is brought to a halt. This method can also be used for manufacturing a fuel storage tank.

The added strength of the water or fuel storage tank can be achieved by applying ribs at strategic locations. The final result is a manufacturing process allows that produces a highly versatile product.

While most manufacturers will offer you a huge variety of standard sizes, you can also opt for custom sizes for very high volume storage requirements. It is worth mentioning here that the fiberglass tank has emerged as a great alte
ative if you aren't keen on using a steel tank. If you have an application that has zero-tolerance to corrosion, then fiberglass is certainly the bets material that you can opt for instead of metals. Another word of advice would be that you should only rely on a professional team for flawless installation of these tanks, irrespective of whether you need them for underground or aboveground storage.
