Whole Food Supplements - What Are They?
Written by John Kosinski
As the types of food we eat become more nutritionally bankrupt, we need to look for other sources to help pick up the slack. I am a huge proponent of eating the right types of food as often as possible in order to experience a high degree of health. The fact remains, however, that sometimes our bodies need a little extra help in doing this because of the nature and quality of the food we eat. So even if we assume a starting point of you eating a well balanced mostly fruit and vegetable diet, what is it that we may need to add?
Most of the time I don't think we need to get overly specific and target only certain micro nutrients or vitamins. I believe that the best approach is to get back to the basics. Go for overall effectiveness by taking a more general approach.
Americans for the most part are eating poor quality foods that have been stripped of vital nutrients. We don't consume enough fruits and vegetables to get the job done. Therefore, we are not usually deficient in one nutrient, but many. Getting back to the basics would mean to consume a product that would give you a little bit of many things A whole food supplement seeks to do that.
Whole food supplements are made by concentrating foods into a pill form. Picture crushing up a group of your favorite fruits and vegetables and putting the powder into capsule form. This way you get all of the benefits of the fruits and vegetables. It makes more sense to do this than to say let me just take a vitamin C pill, vitamin E, or vitamin D. The whole food supplement will give you all of these plus other essential ingredients.
Doesn't that make sense to you? Again it's best to eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, but if you fall short why not get those nutrients in the next best way.
You will need to do your homework. There are many companies selling whole food supplements. Just like everything else in life, you need to do some research to examine their commitment to quality. Remember that price should not always be the only determining factor as sometimes you do get what you pay for.
