Why America is the world leader in Jails

After reading up on the amount of people incarcerated, on probation, parole, and other methods of being monitored by the law, one may find themselves finding a bit of irony in the phrase, “the home of the free.” However, some careful thought will bring you to the conclusion that without such a strong prison network, we would never be able to claim the freedoms we do.

In the US, we have the highest amount of people currently in jail, or being somehow held under the supervision of the law. This includes prison, jail, and any other form of law monitoring scu as probation, parole, house arrest, etc. There are more men and women incarcerated in the United States than in any other country and that includes the places one would think couldn’t have less than us such as Russia and Japan, even more tha
South Africa and Australia. That is an incredible feat.

We find ourselves wondering, why is it that America is the world leader in the amount of people imprisoned? The US prides itself on being the best country in the world, and although it may sound backwards, perhaps our freedoms are the very reason that so many are behind bars. We have rights and freedoms that other countries do not, we are allowed to defend ourselves, report superiors who have done things wrongly to us and others, and our intricate justice system is based on fairness no matter who is on trial.

Our unbiased, unemotional law system exists in order to promote order in our society, and when individuals disturb that order, they are punished. That is by far the best reason for our country having the highest prison rate of any other Country. By keeping those who refuse to abide by the law out of our cities and towns, we are giving law abiding citizens more of a chance to enjoy those freedoms promised to us in our Constitution.

Simply searching a jail database to see how many facilities exist will show you what a great job our justice system is doing in retaining these law-breakers. The amount of prison and jails may shock you, but you can be comforted in knowing that dangerous criminals are where they belong. You are free to live your daily life with a feeling of security, and that is what this country is all about.
