If you’re interested in good health then it would pay you to spend a little time researching about the health benefits of the Omega 3 fatty acids. The Omega 3 essential fatty acids are good fatsNot all fat is good for you, but conversely not all fat is bad for you either. The Omega3 fats are of the good kind. Your body is unable to manufacture either of the 2 most important of the Omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. Though these are crucial to good health the only place that you can get them is from your diet. If you don’t eat foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, or supplement using fish oil supplements, then chances are your intake will be inadequate. This might not seem like a big deal. After all, who cares if you eat certain fats or not? Unfortunately it is a big deal. You see the Omega3 fats have been found to be hugely important to a wide range of areas of our health. Not just our health but also our brain. Researchers are beginning to understand that the brain is made up largely of fat, and that the greatest proportion of that fat is DHA. It is postulated that when very early humans changed from a meat diet to a diet that included fish the increase in their intake of DHA was the steppingstone which allowed their brains to develop the mental capacities that we now display. That’s because DHA, and EPA, are primarily found in fish and other seafoods. It is possible to get them from other food, but they are much more prevalent in fish, and in particular in oily fish. Science is uncovering a wide range of lifestyle diseases which may be positively impacted by increasing your intake of the Omega 3 fatty acids. That’s because most of us now are deficient in our intake of these important fats because our intake of fish has declined dramatically over the last century. The Omega 3 fats have been found to be very important to good heart health, and even the American Heart Association recommends a minimum intake to help reduce the risk of cardiac disease, and even heart attack or death. There’s a wide range of other areas of your health which may also benefit from increasing your intake of essential fatty acids. For instance DHA is very important to the function of your eyes and is prevalent in your retina. Plenty of DHA is important for development of infant and child vision as well as to help reduce the risk of macular degeneration in the elderly, and macular degeneration in the elderly is the primary cause of blindness amongst older people. Research is showing that keeping up the intake of Omega 3 fatty acids during childhood may well help reduce the risk of ADD or ADHD, can help improve child learning outcomes, can help treat depression and possibly reduce the risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s at the other end of life. There are powerful health reasons for increasing your intake of the Omega 3 fatty acids. Unfortunately, though eating fish is one way to do this, it isn’t so easy. Fish has become extortionately expensive and is, in many cases, contaminated with toxins like Mercury. Fortunately though there are high quality fish oil supplements available which are cost effective to take each day and safe.
