Cognos is a software suit of IBM’s business intelligence (BI) and performance management. This software is specially designed to enable business users without technical knowledge to extract corporate data or analyze it or assemble reports in a proper manner. Cognos is composed of nearly three dozen software products. Cognos is software which is built on open standards and the software products can be used with relational and multidimensional data sources from different vendors like Microsoft, NCR Teradata, Oracle, and SAP etc.

The Cognos 8 BI suite is IBM’s leading performance management software, which was first introduced in the year 2005. Cognos 8 BI is compatible with reporting, analysis, dash boarding and scorecards, delivered through a web-based service-oriented architecture i.e. SOA. Later in October 2010, IBM released newer version i.e. Cognos 10, which integrates Cognos with other IBM products that includes SPSS Predictive Analytics and Lotus Connect. Cognos 10 provides mobile capability that allows users to access a complete version of Cognos from mobile devices such as Smartphones and Tablets.

IBM’s Cognos products are used by 25,000 companies around the world. And without fail it ranked in the “leaders” category of Gartner Magic Quadrants for Business Intelligence. For small to mid-sized companies IBM offers Cognos Express which is specially designed for them for their success. The express edition of Cognos allows companies to utilize the function of Cognos 8 BI; it includes planning, budgeting and forecasting functions.
Cognos training is available online at different cost and schedules for people with different expertise. As discussed before Cognos is business intelligence software obtained and released by IBM. Cognos also allows companies to gain in depth analysis, reporting and track performances. But there is challenge of the industry to adapt Cognos to their custom needs so it is easy to make available maximum business intelligence for the individual businesses. Anyone with a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, information systems or sciences can pursue a career in this field as a Cognos developer.
