Why is it good to know more about your wholesale distributor?
Written by William King
Wholesale distributors are a fundamental part of the supply chain and are extremely important for manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. Without them neither supply chain can work efficiently nor can wholesalers survive. Therefore before diving into wholesale business it is necessary to know how they work, what makes them so important and why is it necessary to know more about them? The most important thing that every wholesaler must know about wholesale distributors is how they become legitimate.
Wholesalers are agents who buy a number of products in bulk quantities from manufacturers and resell these products to other industries, wholesalers or directly to the retailers. Wholesalers buy large lots of wholesale products while they sell ahead to relatively smaller lots or redistribute the same big lots to big retailers. The role of wholesale distributor is to optimize the distribution model according to customers’ requirements and to render the best services at the minimum costs. Therefore by using this prototype model, a wholesale distributor generates various scenarios and develops a suitable model for every scenario.
In every scenario pricing model is different for different volumes and management decisions are also different regarding transportation modes and service packages. It involves a lot of hard work to be a legitimate wholesale distributor. Consequently, a wholesaler or a retailer also has to be very particular in finding and dealing with the legitimate distributor. It is advised to visit the distributor yourself, know about his physical set up and more significantly stay in touch with him.
Like wholesaler, it is also important for wholesales to decide upon a set of wholesale products that want to deal in. Deciding a niche is necessary to gauge the success. Calculating the retail rates, adding the shipping charges and overhead expenses will determine which products will have more profit potential. For instance, the distribution cost of car or automotive industry is far different than the distribution costs of clothes or toys. But if a distributor know more about cars, then choosing this industry will be more beneficial for him.
Categorizing the wholesale business into specific niches, deciding the distribution channels and choosing level of transactions are also quite important factors determining the success. Other than international and regional wholesale distributors there are certain terminal wholesale distributors who work for the wholesalers and channel their products to the retailers within the same city. Population and volume of wholesale trade also influence the functionality of these wholesale distributors.
