This essay intends to talk about the various advantages that having a part-time job has for college students and the role these play in making a decision to whether work or not. These advantages will be broadly categorized into ‘Self-development’ and ‘Independence’. These broad contours are inter-related and deal with a number of sub-issues.
Let us first analyse Self-development.
After living in a protected environment during school, a person going to college gets limited exposure to the world that he/she will be dealing with immediately after getting their degree. A part-time job exposes a person to the various nuances of duniyadari(ways of the world) which will eventually help them handle their professional lives better after college. Working involves being given certain responsibility and authority to accomplish that responsibility. Accomplishing these responsibilities and being getting paid for it will work wonders for one’s self-confidence. Also, a student managing his work alongside his study requirements learns how to utilize time optimally, accounting for every minute of one’s idle time and utilizing it accordingly. Getting an opportunity to interact with people from all walks of life gives the person an opportunity to make contacts and learn how to transact, both of which might come in handy in his/her professional life. An exposure to the office culture and chain hierarchy will give the student an edge over any other college pass-out who is uninitiated in this regard.
Now we shall analyse Independence.
Working is never done for free and the remuneration received through these part-time jobs can help fund various expenses. A college education already burns a hole in one’s parent’s pocket and this financial independence allows a person to help reduce some of the financial burden from the parent’s shoulders. Also this financial independence can help in raising a person’s self-esteem and works as a confidence-builder. This financial independence along with the authority given makes a person more responsible who understands the importance of money and the proper utilization of authority along with an understanding of the society really works. Such an understanding also helps a person in making decisions. Some decisions have to be taken without any consultation on the job and quickly and this makes contemplation hard for the person who learns how to take decisions quicker. Also, in a broader sense, the subject matter of the decision to be made may pertain to career choices or specific areas to be pursued after college. A horde of part-time job experiences saves a person some real life time after college which can be better utilized in avenues other than sheer experimentation.
There are, thus, some of the various advantages to working. But there are circumstances in which a part-time job can act out as an unnecessary distraction that can sabotage a student’s academic performance. Even when the requirements of the course being pursued by the student might not be very demanding, the feeling of futility of the studies and a college degree in the present economy in securing a job might induce a student to give too importance to the work, which is already remunerative. This will lead to a near abandoning of studies which can wreak havoc to the future of the student who ignores long term implications in favour of short term gains.
We also need to consider the case of students who are also the sole bread earners of their families and study through either evening colleges or open colleges, with the hope that education will provide them with better employment avenues. But unlike regular college students, these people have regular jobs and can get discouraged by the punishing regime of work and studies thus abandoning all hopes of a better life. Assignment experts can also be used for coaching.
So, in conclusion, is working while studying apt? Having listed the various pros and cons above, it can be said that depending on one’s circumstances, if a person can manage his studies aptly alongside working, there is no reason why such an avenue should not be pursued. Assignment help websites are also of great help to students in times of crisis.
