“Why Unconditional Love is Important”

It's very easy to love somebody when they are loving, kind, and good-natured. In some ways we see a reflection of ourselves, and thus want to help that person in any way, shape, and form that we can. When they smile it brightens our day, and when they are sad we want to make them happy again. We go out of our way to do things that will make a difference in their life. And we are even willing to sacrifice a little bit of our own comforts in order to make them happy. But what about those who are very difficult to love?

We have lots of people around us that are very difficult to love, but they are exactly the people who need more love than ever. It might even seem outside of our realm of understanding to send love, and be loving to someone who is full of hatred and anger. But to fight fire with fire, in the end only consumes the one we see in the mirror. Love is the strongest force in the Universe, and nothing else can compare to its power. Love can conquer all, even those who feel they are very strong.

Once there was a man who was accosted by a mugger late one night on the streets of New York. And the mugger said, “Give me everything you have or I’ll kill you” while pointing a gun in the man’s face. Then all of a sudden out of the blue the man said to the mugger, “I Love You”. And the mugger said, “What the H*** are you talking about”. And again the man said “I Love You” and for some reason it struck the mugger in such a powerful way that he started bawling with tears running down his face, and then he turned and ran away… a true story.

This story has very little to do with the words the man uttered. It had a lot more to do with his sense of being, and a palpable feeling of overpowering love that was exuding from every cell in his body. And there are many people like this on the planet right now. And they are all willing to give up their own life in order to help someone else. Now that’s… true unconditional love!

There is also the true story of St. Francis of Assisi who went to dinner at a rich man's house. And even though he knew the soup was poisoned he ate the soup anyway. And because of his great spiritual connection to God, the Universe, in One and Only, the poison did not kill him. And at that point the rich man got down on his knees and asked forgiveness and became a convert… thus following St. Francis of Assisi from that point on.

And then there was Buddha, who in his 80s was walking from town to town teaching people people how to find inner peace. And then a woman came out of her home and offered him some food. The Buddha knew it was spoiled, but ate it anyway because he did not want to offend this lovely lady, who gave the Buddha food from her heart. So eventually Buddha died, but he was ready to die, he was ready to be with God, the Universe, and the One and Only. This too is a story of great love that goes beyond this body of flesh and blood.

And the last things that Buddha said was and I paraphrase “Don’t listen to any one, follow your own heart” and he was talking about the still small voice that lives within each and every one of us. A voice that will guide us to our own truth and keep us on the path of love.

We all know what we need to do in order to create love on this planet. We all know what our still small voice is telling us. We all know what our voice is saying we should do right now, but are we listening? And are we willing to take action accordingly? That is the big question, a question that can change this world forever. And it will be changed to a world where everyone is full of love, a world where everyone is willing to help everyone, a world where everyone is willing to lay down their life for the good of one, and the good of many, thus life will be different in a powerful way.

It’s all up to us, and the time is now.
