Professional sports in Europe usually live and die by how good the nation's soccer team does, or just how the local team performs in league play. Even so, other sports, such as hockey and basketball, are, in addition prominent and have decent followings. If England hoped for a professional basketball team, would they get one, or would they not be able to make a case for building a professional basketball team? This is an intriguing subject since you have to explain what is intended by a professional team. You will find there's already a pro league in England together with a semi-pro league too. Therefore by definition, there is a professional basketball team in England. Nevertheless, should you ask if they could easily get a top flight league, like Euro League, or an NBA franchise, this is a different scenario. American football appears to have been endeavouring to get into the marketplace for years now with mixed returns. The NFL carries a London franchise in the NFL Europe league, but this was disbanded due to a mediocre following. A yearly regular season match is hosted at Wembley Stadium, but that is simply a special game. There does not appear to be fan support to have a franchise that could play there throughout the season. So what does this have to do with basketball? Well, acquiring a team and getting your group of fans rally around that team requires a massive amount of promotion, especially in top level leagues. This suggests getting a superstar player or two to set up around. Just how many English basketball personalities do you ever read about? Spain has Ricky Rubio, France has Tony Parker and England does not have any one of note at the moment. Developing a flourishing team, along with a fervent fan base, requires a person that the players could relate to. Say an NBA franchise would base itself in London, it might be completely different than the usual European type of play. NBA players depend on their personal abilities to produce players, whereas in Europe the game is experienced as a team using an emphasis on essentials. Some enthusiasts can get in to the razzle-dazzle highlight plays, but a considerable percentage might be put off by selfish attitudes. If England were to acquire a professional team to compete in a decent league, it would have to begin to build itself up. Competing in the Olympics would pick up the curiosity of the people in England, and getting one or two home-grown celebrities might help as well. Until then, it could take personalities from other areas showing up and playing for a team in London. With football being very popular, and basketball having just a lengthy history in England, it becomes challenging to see England possessing an NBA franchise, or a top level European league to give it a franchise. It might simply be far too much energy to build up the group of fans, and then to come up with a form of play that enthusiasts could value whilst keeping a team competitive year after year.
