The Essex area of Woodford Green lies in close proximity to Epping Forest, making up part of Woodford suburb. Most of the area lies within Redbridge, although the 'Woodford side' on the west lies in Waltham Forest. Together with Woodford Green, Woodford also includes Woodford Bridge and Woodford Wells and the community of Woodford Green itself has a tight-knit village feel to it. Woodford Green has good public transport links and it is close to South Woodford, Roding Valley and Woodford underground station, all of which are found on the Central line of the London Underground. The A104 and A113 run through the area and there are plenty of bus routes connecting Woodford Green to most of the nearby towns. The area's proximity to central London as well as to the M25 has made it popular with commuters. In 1856 when the GER line and Woodford Station, was opened the higher fare policy implemented here in direct comparison to other areas such as Walthamstow and Enfield, resulted in this becoming a far more upmarket area. London bankers and merchants constructed their grand houses here and between 1920 and 1950 many estate were built covering the bulk of available land. Woodford Green has been associated with a number of well-known figures, especially those involved in politics. Clement Atlee, who would later become prime minister, lived in this area in the 1920s; and Winston Churchill retained his seat here when he was an MP – a memorial stands to him on the green itself. The famous suffragette, Sylvia Pankhurst, lived here between 1924 and 1956 and was a tireless campaigner for human rights. The memorial in High Road, The Stone Bomb, dedicated to victims of aerial bombing by the Italians in Ethiopia was commissioned by her. Unfortunately the cottage was torn down sometime after she left and all that remains of 'Red Cottage' is her stone memorial. The area has strong connections to the arts and was home to James Hilton, the author best known for the book 'Goodbye Mr Chips' and artists, craftsman and writer William Morris. Tony Robinson, most famous for his portrayal of Baldrick in the Blackadder series, grew up in the area and the comedian Alan Davies went to school here. Two members of the group Bloc Party attended school in the Woodford Green area. The Castle in Woodford Green, which was formerly an inn and is now a Harvester restaurant, was the location of David Beckham's first date with Posh Spice (Victoria Adams). As they were wary of being seen together they decided not to go in. Travellers Friend is an award-winning public house serving real ale where Perudo, an addictive South American dice game, championships are held. Woodford Green and its surrounds have a number of good primary and secondary schools as well as several Catholic schools and a special needs school. There are several sporting clubs, including a cricket club that claims to have been founded in 1735 and a successful athletics club that was established in 1908.
