There are so many self-help books on gaining wealth; some give you mental techniques, some give you practical skills. The biggest secret to wealth is that it starts from the inside. You can learn how to make all kinds of money, find killer investments, have multiple streams of income, but if you don’t have the right mindset, you probably won’t be able to hold onto your wealth. Several issues are at stake when developing the right mindset.

One issue is belief. Some soul-searching is often necessary to determine what you believe to be true. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “My commitment is not to consistency but to truth; and truth changes.”

That means that even when you discover what you believe, it could change. And many times it must change in order for you to change your life.

What do you believe about yourself? Do you believe that you deserve to be rich? Do you believe that you are capable of getting rich?

One point that many authors miss is that before you can align these beliefs with your desire for wealth, you must have a healthy self-esteem. No one can believe themselves deserving or capable of riches if the have low self-esteem.

Therefore, the first step to acquiring wealth is to cultivate a healthy self-esteem. How does one do that? How do you acquire your self-esteem in the first place?

Usually it is impresses on us little by little from our parents in childhood. We grow up with a particular self-image. If you were encouraged to go after your dreams, you tend to have healthy self-esteem. If you were put down and challenged a lot, your self-esteem usually suffered.

But no matter what your past has been, you can improve your self-esteem. One way is to be inspired by the stories of others who have risen above adverse conditions to lead successful lives. By reading books by or about people who overcame the odds and create success, you will kindle that inner spark of desire that outweighs any doubts.

There’s always a spark inside that says, “I can do that too!” However small that spark is, you can take it and build it into a burning desire. And as you are inspired to go for your dreams, your self-esteem improves naturally. As you take action and start accomplishing things your self-esteem gradually improves.

Taking small steps in the direction of your desires keeps you focused on what you want as well as who you want to be. As Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich,” once said, “You become what you think about.” So get inspired and take action, and keep your attention focused on the future you.
