Almost everyone knows what cannabis is, but not everyone has full awareness of its uses, what it can do, its effects, and even how to best ingest or consume it. Although cannabis has now been legalized in more countries and states in the US, not many of us are entirely knowledgeable about it – and knowledge is power, as they say. If you are keen on trying cannabis or have already tried it but would just like to acquire more information about it, here's your complete guide to cannabis: its uses, effects, ingestion, and more.

What it is

Cannabis is a plant species which falls under the Cannabinaceae plant family, and it contains a compound known as THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is what we associate with that 'high' feeling since it has a psychoactive effect on our brain. The plant's dried flowers and leaves are commonly referred to as marijuana, and you can ingest this through smoking, consuming it as an edible product, or even applying it to a mucous membrane or on the skin.

Its effects

The effects of cannabis are well-known, but its overall effects will often depend on how much you consume or smoke, the method you have chosen to ingest it, and if you have ever had any previous experience with the substance. Its effects may also vary based on your mood when you take it and the social environment you are in when you use it.

But some of the most common effects of cannabis include an altered or changed state of consciousness, where you can feel 'high' or happy, relaxed, euphoric, uninhibited, and more sociable. You may also experience a distorted feeling of space or time (the passage of time may feel longer) and you may also become more sensitive and have your senses heightened. Cannabis use can also lead to increased heart and pulse rate, dilated pupils, and bloodshot eyes. Most everyone who regularly takes it will also experience a case of the 'munchies' as they call it, where their appetite is increased.

How long do the effects last?

When you smoke it, you can begin to feel its effects in as little as 10 to 30 minutes, and these effects will usually stay for about two to three hours. If you eat it (in the form of a cookie or brownie, for example), it will take longer since your body still needs to absorb it completely, although the effects of cannabis which has been consumed or eaten can last longer as well (up to 12 hours).

Its medicinal uses

More people are using marijuana for medicinal purposes, especially those who have conditions such as anxiety or stress, cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, neuropathy, PTSD, Parkinson's disease, and more. Although the evidence for cannabis and its effects on these conditions is still not 100% proven and a lot of research still has to be gathered, numerous people already swear by its benefits.

How to use it

As already mentioned, you can choose to smoke it (through a hand pipe or a roll or joint), you can ingest it through eating, and you can apply it to your mucous membranes when it is in tincture form. But many people usually ingest it through smoking since this is the fastest method to achieve the desired effects, and even if you aren't an expert in making a joint or blunt, you can buy pre rolls online which can contain various blends and which can have the effects that you desire, whether it's increased appetite, relief from stress, sleepiness, and so on.
