Your MOT Testing Options
Written by Abbey smith
In the UK, driving without a valid MOT is a serious offence. To ensure that people have no excuse for not getting their car MOTed the government have licensed plenty of firms to carry out MOT testing. The fact there are so many testing stations spread throughout the UK means that getting your MOT done is never a problem.
Most dealership garages, that offer servicing as part of their aftercare service, can also carry out MOTs. Many independent garages also offer the service.
You can also now get your test carried out at a vehicle-servicing centre. These centres are set up primarily to offer vehicle owners good value servicing for their cars. However, they also offer ancillary services such as brake and tyre replacement and MOTs.
Save Money on MOT Testing
Many people think that the price of MOTs is fixed. To a certain extent, this is true. Each year the price of a MOT is set by VOSA the Vehicle Operator and Services Authority. They work out how much time is needed to carry out the MOT, the cost of buying the necessary equipment, training and other cost factors to come up with a price. If the list of tasks involved changes significantly they re-asses the entire process from scratch.
The price VOSA comes up with is the maximum price that can be charged, so from that point of view the price is indeed fixed. However, in theory at least, providers can charge less for MOTs. Many garages do not do so because their overheads do not allow them to, but a few providers are starting to do so.
The Best Place to Get MOT Testing Done
Because the MOT testing process follows a strict list of standards, the test you get is the same wherever you have it done. So, obviously if you can get it done for less you should do so. Amongst those providers offering cheap MOTs are vehicle servicing centres. Their scale allows them to offer good MOT deals to customers who have their car serviced at the same time or soon before their MOT is due.
