One thing I absolutely love about a new year, or a new day for that matter, is that it gives us a fresh start to set new goals and implement new plans to pursue and achieve. I have recently set some new goals that have been keeping me very busy, motivated, and excited. One of my many goals began about three weeks ago. I cut desserts out of my diet. It started with a chocolate fast. I was literally consuming at least one bar or 5 pieces of dark chocolate every day, and that is not including cookies, icecream and other desserts I love.
We all have strengths and weakness. Our strengths are usually referred to in positive terms such as "smart," "strong" or "talented." Rarely do we view our weaknesses or deficits as potential clues to our strengths. Some common and negatively perceived characteristics can actually help us discover some very positive qualities and underlying strengths. Following is a list of 7 common negative labels and some other ways we might look at them:
Ever wonder why people are the way they are or where they learned to be a certain way? We cannot discount the influence of upbringing, peers, environment and genetics. Although we have very limited or no control over some of the things that shape our children, we can do our part to make a positive difference. We teach them by the way we treat them and the way we treat others. We can lead them by our example and how we react and cope with people and situations. It is empowering and encouraging to know that children can learn love and happiness when it is manifested in our own lives.
The holidays are some of the best times and opportunities we have to continue our family traditions. Many of us can recall how our families celebrated Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, or birthdays every year. There are some extra special traditions we may remember. Maybe every Christmas we got together with our grandparents or we went out of town to visit friends or family members. Maybe we participated in the local Thanksgiving parade every year or there was a certain dish we especially enjoyed that was prepared specifically for Thanksgiving day.
Whether you are watching a movie, riding in an elevator, listening to a commercial on the radio, or simply shopping, you will find that there is always some kind of background instrumental music playing. You may not even be aware of it, but it is there setting the mood. In a movie, it becomes a part of your experience. You grip your seat as you feel the tension building. The excitement makes your heart race. You feel the sadness and are moved to tears. In an elevator, background instrumental music may comfort and soothe you, or it may help you to relax and slow down a little.
All sorts of things can trigger irritability in people, from minor traffic jams to major headaches. Everyone gets upset or annoyed sometimes. We all have lost our temper and reacted without thinking. We have succumbed to anger that drives us to say and do things we normally wouldn’t. And it is when we lose control over our thoughts and feelings, that our irritability and anger can do some major damage to our relationships and lives.

Now that fall has arrived, I have been winding down a little and making time to watch some movies. A friend once recommended Walk the Line, based on the true life story of Johnny Cash, so that is what I decided to watch and I am so glad I did. I thought it was an excellent movie--very sad and touching, yet inspiring and moving. The pain and rejection that Johnny experienced early in his life almost destroyed him. In his music, the artist within was able to express himself, release some of his pain, anger, hope and faith.
Before we set out to accomplish anything at all, we must begin with a clear picture in our minds of already having achieved our goal. We wouldn’t even imagine trying to glue broken pieces of pottery back together without any idea of what it’s supposed to look like. So, why should we go through life without a clear purpose? Once we begin to visualize something, we can begin to figure out how to make it happen. Following are steps to consider in setting goals: A Clear Purpose
Sometimes it looks like things cannot get much worse. We may not be able to see how anything could possibly turn around. The world feels like it is crashing in on us from every side. A man I know, I will call him Brad, hit rock bottom a little while ago. He lost his job of over ten years and with it his means to provide financially for his family. People all around his neighborhood were losing their employment and many lost their homes. Times were tough. Businesses were shutting down. Jobs were scarce and no one was hiring.
Conversation is probably the most important part of your dating experience. Sure, looking your best and having a good attitude matter, but most of your time together will in some way be spend in conversation. Following are a few tips to make your conversations more interesting, comfortable, and enjoyable. ⥠Have a good balance of talking and listening. If you tend to be talkative, remember to ask more questions and take time to listen to your date. If you tend to be on the quieter side, elaborating more on things can help you get in the flow of conversation.
We can all live with purpose because there is so much to live for. There are things we can pursue, discover, or accomplish that fill our lives with meaning and purpose. We can have vision for our lives, dream dreams, and fulfill our callings. There is always something for us to do. Pursuing interests, developing skills, setting goals, and prioritizing our time all help us to grow and give us something to anticipate. We can make each day count and live with purpose.
