Eckhart Tolle is an inspiring spiritual teacher, who travels and teaches throughout the world. He conveys a simple yet profound message that there is a way out of suffering and into peace. His practical teachings have helped thousands of people find greater fulfillment in their lives. Tolle is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition but does not exclude any.
Tolle was born in Germany and spent the first 13 years of his life there. After graduating from the University of London, he was a research scholar and supervisor at Cambridge University. When he was 29, a deep spiritual transformation virtually dissolved his old identity and radically changed the course of his life.
Tolle’s next few years were devoted to integrating and understanding that transformation, which marked the beginning of an intense inward journey. He is the author of The Power of Now, a New York Times bestseller which has been widely recognized as one of the most influential spiritual books of our time. It has been translated into 28 languages.
Eckhart Tolle is able to convey the deepest spiritual truth in clear and simple words. • You are here to enable the divine purpose of the universe to unfold. That is how important you are!
• When you are present, when your attention is fully and intensely in the Now, Being can be felt, but it can never be understood mentally. To regain awareness of Being and to abide in that state of “feeling-realization” is enlightenment.
• There’s no need to seek out some other place or some other condition or situation and then do it there. Do it right here and now. Wherever you are is the place for surrender. Whatever the situation you’re in, you can say “yes” to what is, and that is then the basis for all further action.
• To be identified with your mind is to be trapped in time—the compulsion to live almost exclusively through memory and anticipation. This creates an endless preoccupation with past and future and an unwillingness to honor and acknowledge the present moment and allow it to be. The compulsion arises because the past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfillment in whatever form. Both are illusions.
Eckhart Tolle is known for his New York Times bestseller, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. His message is simple—living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. The Power of Now is clearly the place to get started with Tolle. At first, I knew very little about him. I couldn’t even pronounce his name. Then I started reading his book and was captivated after his first paragraph:
A beggar had been sitting by the side of the road for over thirty years. One day a stranger walked by. “Spare some change?” mumbled the beggar, mechanically holding out his old baseball cap. “I have nothing to give you,” said the stranger. Then he asked, “What’s that you are sitting on?” “Nothing,” replied the beggar. “Just an old box. I have been sitting on it for as long as I can remember.” “Ever looked inside?” asked the stranger. “No,” said the beggar. “What’s the point? There’s nothing in there.” “Have a look inside,” insisted the stranger. The beggar managed to pry open the lid. With astonishment, disbelief, and elation, he saw that the box was filled with gold.
I am that stranger who has nothing to give you and who is telling you to look inside. Not inside any box, as in the parable, but somewhere even closer inside: inside yourself.
Tolle later writes: “Always say ‘yes’ to the present moment. What could be more futile, more insane, than to create inner resistance to something that already is? What could be more insane than to oppose life itself, which is now and always now? Surrender to what is. Say ‘yes’ to life—and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.”
The Power of Now can be viewed as a spiritual guidebook that inspires and helps you change you life. The book’s acceptance is tied into Tolle’s ability to teach, clarify, and make you think. According to the author, “It’s not a Buddhist book or a Christian book, but it conveys the essence of spirituality, not only conceptually, but also energetically.” It is for anybody who ever wondered what it really means to “live in the now.”
