Dr. Joseph O’Donnell is director of Joseph N. O’Donnell and Associates. He holds a Ph.D. Degree from Northwestern University. He did his clinical internship and Post Doc fellowship at the V.A. Medical Center North Chicago, IL. He was employed by the same medical center and very early in his career became chief of the substance abuse rehab centers which included a 50 bed drug rehab program and a 50 bed alcohol treatment center.
He also held a dual responsibility of director of organizational development called training in group effectiveness and resourcefulness. In that capacity as an internal consultant he was involved in assisting with the smooth transition of the merger of the V.A. Medical Center with the Chicago Medical School. During his tenure at the V.A. he held an assistant Professor of psychiatry faculty position at the Chicago Medical School/University of Health Sciences. He lectured and was directly involved in the clinical training of medical students, clinical psychology interns, and psychiatric residents. Despite his busy schedule he found time to study for and obtain a Masters of Business Administration. After leaving the V.A. his focus was more on clinical issues than administrative and subsequently specialized in neuropsychological evaluation and eventually focused on the special needs of children.
He has used neuropsychological testing as a means of assessing the specific deficits of this population and quantitative EEG as a tool to assess neurocognitive disorders. To date he has performed over six thousand neuropsychological assessments and over four thousand quantitative EEGs. He had always had an interest in biofeedback when exposed to the work of Barbara Brown, Joe Kamiya, Elmer Green and other biofeedback pioneers. It wasn’t until the emerging field of EEG biofeedback that he renewed his interest as it directly related to his involvement in neuropsychological assessment not so much as assessment but as an intervention to address specific neurological disorders of both children and adults.
He has a passion for this approach for a specific reason: “It works!” He is a pioneer in the introduction of EEG biofeedback to the Chicago region and has focused much of his practice to its application to variety of neurological disorders. He has trained many of the current EEG biofeedback therapists in the area and continues to consult with many of them not only in the immediate Chicago area but also in many other areas of the country and internationally.
Dr. O’Donnell has held staff privileges at many area hospitals. In addition to the V.A. they have included Good Samaritan Hospital, Westlake Community, McNeal, Chicago Lake Shore, Riveredge, Glen Oaks, Hartgrove, Forest, Woodland, Martha Washington, University Hospital, Franklin Boulevard, Gage Park, and Rush.
