According to principals of Chinese medicine, physical symptoms are viewed as warning signs of a deeper underlying imbalance. The focus of Traditional (or Five Element) Acupuncture is on balancing the underlying causative factors rather than on suppressing the symptoms.
Your first visit is designed to help your practioner understand your reasons for seeking acupuncture treatment and to assess the underlying problems leading to your symptoms. Your acupuncturist then determines the underlying causes of your concerns or symptoms by considering you in your entirety- physical body, mental fuctioning, emotions, life habits, and spirit for life. This holistic evaluation is very important because even though two people may suffer the same complaint (such as headache or sinus infection), the energetic imbalance causing the trouble is almost certainly different.
Many, but not all, conditions find quick resolution with acupuncture treatment. Research shows that acupuncture treatments have a cumulative effect- each treatment builds on the benefits of the previuos treatment. To maintain this progression, the first few treatments are scheduled a week apart. Gradually, treatments are spaced out to two-week intervals, and eventually to seasonal adjustments. Of course, frequency of treatments varies with each individual.
