The end of life is not a medical conquest, it's a spiritual undertaking.
Medicine is often artificial wellness and wellness seems like voodoo medicine
As an emergency medicine physician for nearly 30 years, I’ve cared for every type of patient at all stages of life and death.
My expertise: Introducing palliative care to patients who will never get better but want to feel better, and helping family caregivers who struggle with advance care planning and end-of-life decisions.
By introducing palliative care in the ER, I bring value to my practice of medicine. I teach patients and caregivers to expect more discussion and less intervention. I allow them to have more say in the care they receive.
I don't tell people what to do. I urge them to get in touch with their feelings, especially the emotions of fear and love that stop most people from dying with dignity.
Here's what I've done as a nationally recognized palliative care expert and advocate:
• Written "Wishes To Die For: A Caregiver’s Guide to Advance Care Planning," a book that helps you examine your conscience and determine your final wishes
• Promoted my booklet "Is Palliative Care Right For YOU?" which helps people understand the benefits of palliative.
• Created "Sail the 7 Seas of Graceful Departures," a free eBook that outlines the journey from making medical decisions to achieving final wishes.
• Written "The Gateway to Palliative Care through the ER," a nurse practicum and new perspective for end-of-life care.
• I publish Dr. H’s Clipboard, handy email tips for advance care planning, twice a month. Subscribe at KevinHaselhorst.com.
• Writing the forthcoming book: "Advance Care Planning for Caregivers: A Four-Seasons Approach for Survival" which will be published in (April 2018)
• Present keynotes to healthcare organizations, family caregivers, and medical students on the topics of advance care planning, palliative care and end-of-life care.
