Someone recently asked me what what I know I was “made for” in life. My answer: I was made to empower and awaken others through Nature, self-awareness and love! I am not sure yet what that looks like, but I do know that my artwork, listening and sharing with others are a huge part of that picture. This is just the beginning…

As a previous counselor of youth in care, women fleeing domestic abuse and children of all ages from various homes and backgrounds, I have seen my share of heartache and trauma. I have seen the shame, the guilt, and self hatred that people carry with them each day… poisoning their minds, their hearts and their lives.

As a coping mechanism, we create masks and walls of defense that keep this pain hidden within, locked away from the judgments and blame of those around us. We bury our pain deep within, hoping that one day, it will just leave us and allow us to be free.

These masks help us to live in the world as ‘normal’ functioning human beings. At least that is how it appears to those on the outside looking in. However, we cannot fool ourselves for long… we cannot hide from our selves. The pain grows in intensity the longer it is ignored. We find ourselves becoming sick, depressed, suicidal or self destructive. We begin to lose the ability to hide behind the masks and walls that once kept us safe. We become exposed, vulnerable, open…

It is here, in this place of vulnerability and openness that healing begins… it is here, that given the courage, strength and support of others, we can release ourselves from the prison we’ve built up around us.
