Scientist-Artist Sondra Barrett sheds light on life’s mysteries, from cells and molecules to wine. She earned her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Illinois Medical School and completed post-doctoral training in immunology and hematology at the University of California Medical School (UCSF).
Following her post-doctoral fellowship Dr. Barrett remained on the faculty at UCSF for a decade engaged in cutting-edge leukemia research. It was here she began working the softer side of medicine, psychosocial support for children and families with cancer. It was also by working with children that she discovered the microscope for showing the art within life. The healing power of the image propelled her to exploring imagery and shamanism.
Dr. Barrett has been a pioneer in bridging science and complementary medicine teaching health professionals around the United States basic bodymind medicine, stress management, nutrition and cell medicine. She has guided groups in energy management, cancer and immune support, shamanic healing. Taking cues from the inner microscopic views, Sondra opens a doorway to the mystical molecules that build life.
As a nationally recognized medical scientist, Dr. Barrett’s clinical research has been funded by National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Bechtel Foundation, and University of California. Her educational support programs have been funded by Brodurbund Foundation, Symington Family Fund, and the Flow Foundation. Her clients have included: CorText Continuing Education, Cellegy, Health Gate, Delphi, Marin General Hospital, Institute of Health and Healing, Dr. Elson Haas, Bauman College, and Born of Women Films.
In addition to adult and research programs, Sondra has educated children about science and health at Lawrence Hall of Science, Bolinas Public Schools, Center of Attitudinal Healing, Camp Sunburst, and the School Garden Network. She developed the “Inner Space” exhibit for Lawrence Hall of Science.
From cellular well-being to wine is another phase of Sondra Barrett’s professional career. She says she fell in love with wine from the inside out while artist-in-residence for Sterling Vineyards. Photographing wine at all stages of life for more than two decades, interning at a Russian River winery during harvest, and participating as advisory board member of WineSpirit since 2003, Dr. Barrett gained a unique perspective on the art and spirit of wine. She shares that in her new book Wine’s Hidden Beauty.
Her photographs have appeared in numerous publications, winning awards from both Nikon and Olympus and are featured in Napa Valley tasting rooms.
Dr. Barrett is a nationally recognized speaker and pioneer in mindbody and lifestyle medicine. She developed some of the earliest programs in psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) and has taught at UC Berkeley, UCSF, Sonoma State, JFK University, California Institute of Integral Studies, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, Wisdom University, California Pacific Medical Center, Kaiser Hospitals, and numerous venues throughout the United States.

Many of my published articles are available as downloads here. http://sondrabarrett.com/communication-2/
I will add more here. Much also on my blog with emphasis on cells, sacred geometry, wine, cellular intelligence and who we are as sacred beings.
My content and interests span understanding and conveying the science underlying mindbody medicine to expanding our personal experience of our cells and spirituality. I've delivered health education programs to medical professionals, patients, adults and children for more than three decades.
I like to make knowledge practical and meaningful.
My doorway into the inner world through the micrscope opened my eyes to the greater aspects of who we are and all of life. I continue to learn and welcome the opportunity to share what I know with others.
I am presently finishing my new book Cells and the Sacred to be published by Sounds True, an exciting adventure, challenging too. I'll keep you posted when its out in 2012.
