Life is all about ups and downs, its very nature is like that. ‘Where there has been puran (input) there is bound to be galan (output)’ -this is the universal principle that is found in everything that increases and decreases; be it our wealth, our health, our body, our mind or any other aspect of our life.
Every bank account has a credit and a debit, isn’t it? Why can’t there be only credit and just credit in our account? It is because it is a law that ‘for every input, there has to be an output’. We eat all day long. Now, just imagine what would happen if the rule of output is taken away by Nature? Eating is input and excretion is output. Similarly, coming of thoughts is input and going of thoughts is output.
However, while passing through the tough terrain of one’s life, one is generally not able to accept this law. When one after the other, things do not happen as per our wish, we start suspecting in fear that, “If this is how it will continue, what will happen of me? Why is this happening to me only? What should I do now? How do I get out of this?” Few blaming their badluck, even run to astrologers temples and various Gurus and experts, in the hope that they will get them out of the rough patch.
And when one continues to meet failure, most of us lose the self-confidence and get surrounded by negative thoughts such as, “I am not good enough. People know things better than me, they are more capable and knowledgeable. I am no match to them. I am not fit for this world.”
At this juncture, we have 2 options with us:
1.We either hold onto our negative thoughts and suffer, or
2.We listen to what the Enlightened Ones have to say in this regard, and begin to walk the path of liberation that they suggest.
Lets discuss the outcome of Option 1 first...
One gets immersed in the negative thoughts so much so that he slowly stops interacting with people, stops greeting people, stops meeting people, stops smiling, laughing and enjoying life altogether. He gets so lost that even if goodluck comes knocking at his door one day, he is unable to respond. People stop coming to him anymore and he begins to withdraw from people all the more.
Is holding onto negative thoughts so disastrous? Lets try to understand this through an experiment.
Take a light vessel with some water in it and hold the vessel in your hand. Easy to hold? Can you hold this for long? Yes? quite long? It is very light, isn’t it? Ok. So continue to hold it then. Do not rest your hand nor place it down, and after some time, observe what happens.
What happened? - Your hand got numb and static, it stopped working, like almost paralysed!
Our negative thinking is like this vessel. If we hold it for just a few seconds, it is ok; but if we hold it for a long time, we start feeling it heavy, it becomes burdensome. And if we still do not leave it and stubbornly continue to hold onto it, then what happens that you just experienced. Similar state happens of our mind when we hold onto negative thoughts. The mind stops working, it goes numb.
It is true that situations are not in our hand. But how we face the situation is definitely in our hands. It is true that when tough times arrive, they surround us from all around. But the way we choose to think, so we become. Our thoughts reflect our self. Our thoughts shape our destiny.
We cannot stop thoughts from coming, but we must know the law that it has come for going. We do not have to cling to it nor get influenced by it nor worry about how to stop it from coming. The more we fight with our thoughts, the more we get entangled; the more we fear thoughts, the more we suppress them. Never try to stop the thoughts from coming, let them come. But just see that you do not waste your energy over these thoughts - neither for welcoming them, nor for pushing them out.
Our energy, our meditation should always be riveted only on our goal and the faith in our goal. Human life is very difficult to get. And therefore our ultimate goal of this life should be to become free from all our mistakes and attain liberation.
The tough terrain in one’s life is a direct result of one’s own mistakes, following which we charged demerit karmas in past. We do not want to continue this chain by further indulging in negative or adverse meditation because when these karmas come forth to give effect, it makes our life miserable; it makes one feel like he is on fire. While merit (punya) karmas, when they give their effect, make us feel very sweet and happy. Therefore God has always warned, “Think very hard and be judicious before creating any kind of karma. Beware of the kind of effects your actions will render. Be very careful when you are charging demerit karma eg. when you try to increase your wealth by cheating others. Bear in mind that the consequences of your actions are inevitable.”
In that case, in what way can we begin to exercise Option 2?
•Start with harnessing a pure intent in your mind that, ‘May no living being be hurt through me.’
•And next, surrender your ignorance in the lotus feet of Gnani, and with His grace attain the knowledge of the Self.
Gnani says :
Miseries are bound to come and they will continue to make us miserable until there is ignorance of the Self. Moksha i.e. permanent happiness is in the palm of your hand, provided the ignorance of the Self goes away. Then, irrespective of whether the terrain is tough, rough or smooth, it will not affect you anymore; for you now reside in your real Self, which is the abode of the permanent bliss. The law of puran-galan does not apply to the Self as ‘the Self is constant, it never increases or decreases’.
Thus, the real wealth is actually our real Self. You want to know your real Self, don’t you?
Realize the Self from the Living Gnani in order to get rid of the tough terrain on a permanent basis!

Ambalal M. Patel was a civil contractor by profession. In June 1958, spontaneous Self-Realization occurred within Ambalal M. Patel. From this point on, Ambalal became a Gnani Purush, and the Lord that manifest within him became known as Dada Bhagwan. A Gnani Purush is One who has realized the Self and is able help others do the same. Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan used to go from town to town and country-to-country to give satsang (spiritual discourse) and impart the knowledge of the Self, as well as knowledge of harmonious worldly interactions to everyone who came to meet him. This spiritual science, known as Akram Vignan, is the step-less path to Self-realization.
