Recently someone asked me directly, "is it possible to read 2000 words per minute?" Yes, it is possible. Faster is also possible. It is possible to read even faster than that. We're not sure how fast is possible for us humans. However, considering that the average ending rates for our students is 1600-2000 wpm, and some have read at 24,000 wpm with 95% comprehension, the speed the inquirer asked about is certainly possible. From having taught tens of thousands of people in the past these skills, I'll share the 2 most important keys to success.
As you begin to research and select an approach to developing your speed reading skills, you will inevitably find continuous references to the fact that untrained readers need to expand the number of words that the eyes take in with each eye stop. These stops are called fixations. In theory, the more words your eyes take in per fixation, the faster your reading becomes. Programs that focus on primarily training to increase the number of words per fixation are misguided in understanding the nature of comprehension.
Speed reading success requires you to understand and embrace certain qualities of your mind if you are to succeed. Due to the radically different approach and necessary new behaviors, an unprepared learner can easily give up. Rather than to succumb to this premature emotional reaction, speed reading success demands that we appreciate the natural reaction of our mind to new and different ways of behaving, and do something about it.
One of the most frequently questions I get before someone starts a speed reading course with us is, "How do I stop subvocalization?" Beginning learners also ask.
Mentally, quickly fill in the blank of the following statement with a word or words that best describes your reading ability: I am a __________ reader. Your response will most likely fall into one of two major categories: negative or positive. Some negative terms I typically hear from people in my workshops include "slow", "lazy", "overwhelmed" or "frustrated" while the more positive ones include "good", "avid", or "voracious". Whatever your attitude, it makes sense that those with a more negative attitude typically read less and find reading to be more boring and a chore.
Subvocalization is the procedures of "saying" words on a page, and while it is ridiculously helpful to developing readers, it is a big hindrance on the speed reading abilities of older people and those who are previously strong quick readers. The explanation is simple: we speak, and thus tend to be allowed to listen to and comprehend, around 140 words per minute. By comparison, the average brain can make sense of virtually 600 wpm (words per minute). somebody only learning tr

How Can a Fake Smile Produce Health And Avoid Stress? Howard Hughes owned a major airline called Pan-American World Airways from the 1930s to December 4, 1991. Pan-Am required all its flight attendants (Stewardesses) to be thin, attentive, and consistently smile at the passengers. Of course it was a phony smile, and became recognized as a Pan-Am Smile. All their advertising revealed beautiful young women exposing their pearly white teeth standing in front of massive airplanes. There are two types of smiles: the Pan-Am toothy, forced Smile.
As a speed reading coach, when I get a new learner who has been frustrated by trying to learn speed reading in the past, I frequently hear something like, "I was zipping through materials at high speeds, but I just didn't understand the material." Here are 7 simple, but powerful tips that can make the difference. 1. Understand that moving the eyes faster and more efficiently is only one piece of the process. The second most important piece to speed reading is to get your mind to respond the print. The mind's response to the print is what comprehension is all about. 2.

The most often asked questio I get when people either see me read or when they submit a question to my website goes like this: “Does it really work?” Or, “Can you really comprehend when you read really fast? The short answer is yes! This article will explore the question behind that question. Because I’ve been using the skills so long, I’ve been perplexed about why this question is so often asked. I recently discovered a couple of speed reading programs that are free plug-ins for electronic reading especially web-based reading. I excitedly downloaded and installed them onto my desktop machine. Unfortunately these free plug-ins were a major disappointment that built upon common a misunderstanding about speed reading.
Nothing is worse for an avid reader and a love of books than having a child who hates to read. Reading to a child early in life will help them foster a love of reading and prepare them to read themselves, but sometimes not even that can be enough to foster a love of the written word. Reading parents know that aversion to reading will haunt their child for the rest of his life, making school harder making the rest of their life harder.
10. Skim Before Your Read - Speed read for main ideas in nonfiction works and textbooks. Scan the table of contents and first and last sentences of each paragraph. You'll improve your reading speed and comprehension if you understand a book's main ideas first. After you've skimmed the material, ...
I must confess, I hate the term "speed reading." Since the popularization of the approach in the 1960s, there has been such a flood of approaches to the term "speed reading," and so many who have tried to cash in on the promise it offers by unskilled practitioners and program developers, that there is no standard definition. With that being said, then how would you answer the question, "how fast is it, really, to speed read?" Answering the question depends on your perception of the term.

Speed reading successfully requires you to train and use your eyes in new ways. All speed reading training covers some approach to getting the eyes to move more efficiently. Did you know that there are eye training methods that could actually be harmful? Here are some mistakes to avoid. 1. Focusing on eye span development exclusively. Speed reading does require the reader to learn to use the eyes more efficiently. Moving the eyes more fluidly and "attending" to more words for each fixation (stop of the eyes) is essential.

Is Replaying An Emotional Trauma Good Or Bad For You? Who Cares – But Why Controlled mental replaying of your negative experience (event) is excellent therapy. Repetition with new understanding deadens, dulls and benumbs the pain from the original occurrence. Mental repetition of a traumatic event desensitizes your emotions. Examples: a severe car accident, the boss firing your fundament, a dirty divorce, war battles or personal physical attacks (rape).
The most often questio I get asked is, "How can I read over 1500 words per minute and still understand, or comprehend the material?" Stated in another form, "Does speed reading really work?" Without writing an entire course, this article will try to answer these questions. When people question about reading fast and not comprehending, there is a basic misunderstanding of terms. As I've written in previous articles, reading is the mind's response to print. If your mind is not responding when you are applying any speed reading technique, then you are in fact not reading.
If you want to read fast then you have to see well what you are reading. It is extremely difficult to speed read if you do not have good eyesight. As we usually read texts from near distances then you need good near vision for being a fast reader. Being short-sighted is actually not a problem as when you are reading at 30 or 35 centimeters then it does not matter if you can see well at longer distances, for example 2 meters or 200 meters. Unfortunately near vision tends to get worse, when people get older. Many of us start developing near vision problems in forties or fifties.

One simple question: would you be willing to invest a few minutes right now to save an hour a day for the rest of your life? To read a book twice as fast as you can now? To get through the morning paper in minutes? To absorb those reports, Web pages, e-mails, journals, and magazines with less stress and more enjoyment?n nYou can, and it is actually easy. All you need is a timepiece (a kitchen timer that counts down to a beep works best) and a willingness to explore a new way
Can intelligence be increased? That's a radical question that has been hotly debated for well over a century. As with most "radical" questions the debate is usually centered around the lines of demarcation or differing disciplines. Historically intelligence has been measured as a factor of abstract numerical capabilities as tested by the dreaded IQ test.
If you cannot comprehend at high reading speeds, it is not reading! There is a mistaken notio "out there" that if you speed read, you will not fully comprehend. That is a myth! Many of my students come to me after having failed some other training. A recent new student said to me, "I bought a software program that got my speed up to 2500 words per minute (wpm), but I don't comprehend anything." If he didn't comprehend, he wasn't reading! It was a waste of time.
As you sit down to study for a big test or finally decide to consume 500 pages of encyclopedia information - imagine how convenient it would be to digest the information at a faster rate. Speed reading is a helpful technique that allows one to complete more books, magazines, and other publications and texts than ever before. Depending on the software or other training program encountered, a variety of methods can effectively elevate the rate of reading and comprehension for a
When people watch me read they will often say something like, "Oh, you're a speed reader. Does that really work?" I will usually respond, "No!" I know that sounds flippant, but truthfully, it does not work. You work it. Speed reading is a systematic approach you apply to learning and absorbing printed material. I learned how to read faster and better about 32 years ago. I was desperate. I was a terrible student in my undergraduate days, and about to start a graduate school program while still needing to work full time. If I was going to succeed, I had to learn to do things differently.
When most people start to learn to speed read, they have to focus on moving their eyes more efficiently. This takes the mind off track from responding to the print. All reading requires some level of comprehension, or understanding, otherwise it is not reading. Reading can be defined as the mind's response to the printed symbols. Effective comprehension requires full engagement of your mind with the material. Unfortunately, many people start their journey of learning to speed read, and they suffer from mind wandering regardless of whether they are going fast, or slow.
You've decided to learn about speed reading and maybe pursue a program to change your outdated skills to a level that can help you better cope with today's massive overload of information. You're excited! You read some information about learning to move your eyes more efficiently. You may even start practicing. Then it dawns on you: you've moved through several pages of print and you have no idea what the material is about. What should you do?
Woody Allen famously went on a speed reading course and boasted that he managed to read War and Peace in 20 minutes’. ‘That’s great’, said his astonished friend. ‘What’s it about?’ And Woody replied, ‘It involves Russia!’ This story illustrates a common problem for people who are starting to learn how to read faster: their speed improves at the expense of comprehension. The result is that they feel that the whole thing is a waste of time and they give up. It’s not real reading if you can’t understand anything – so what’s the point?
Speed reading has become an essential business and academic success tool in the knowledge economy. With the onset of PCs, and the internet, live classes have diminished as a result of "instant access." One of the seemingly easiest choices someone might take to learn the skills is to buy a software program. But does software training work? Although I can't state that I have reviewed all software programs, I have reviewed the most popular ones on the market.
ou've bought into the idea that speed reading can be an essential skill for success in today's knowledge economy and academic success, or you probably would not be reading this article. These are skills you don't have now, but want to learn and master. After doing some research, you discover that there are many options of learning media you can choose from. But which one is really the best to insure your success? Your available options are: 1. Buy a book. There are a few good books out there. But, I don't know anyone who successfully mastered the skills through a book.

After almost three weeks of speed reading, I am reading faster but I had been struggling to truly comprehend everything that I was reading. I’ve spent several hours practicing and testing speed and comprehension on everything from short stories to technical writing, and I’ve learned that not all reading is the same! I tend to be able to read a light book at close to 700 words per minute now and then I struggle to get through more dense material at 500 words per minute. Now th
Congratulations on taking a step towards learning to read faster by "speed reading." If you're like most people who are trying to improve their reading skills to the level of super fast speed reading, you are probably wondering how to do it while maintaining, if not improving, your comprehension. Many of my students come to me after they have invested time and money in learning to speed read only to report that they can move through reading material at the rate of 1200 - 2500 words per minute, but cannot understand what they have read.
Do you want to read faster? I guess do you do so in at least some cases. Well, then turn pages faster. Sounds ridiculous? Actually, it does matter how much time you spend on paging. During my speed reading courses I have observed carefully how the trainees perform the reading exercises. I have noticed that different people spend considerably different amount of time on turning the pages. Most people can turn pages in one or two seconds, but some people waste too much time on it.
We were discussing how to read a newspaper in my introductory speed reading lesson the other night. I always teach my students to read the first and last paragraph in jou al articles and newspaper human interest stories (along with headings and visual aids) and the first paragraph in news articles. One of my students said that she had noticed that the writers in our newspaper had started to get creative and were not getting to any facts until about the third paragraph. So the next morning I did a survey by reading all of the first paragraphs of all the articles in our paper.
