1. To Reduce Pain and Improve Joint Mobilityr
As mentioned earlier, a TENS unit is designed to reduce pain. But it’s interesting to know the various types of pain it can relieve and thereby improves joint mobility. E.g. in a study conducted on 90 participants with shoulder pain resulted from paralysis (hemiplegic) it reduced shoulder pain and improved shoulder joint mobility and their overall quality of life.
In another study on 33 people with chronic back pain, 14 experienced 30% reduction in pain due to TENS.
In various other studies, patients experienced upper back pain relief, arthritis pain and even pain associated to dental procedures.
2. Pain Relief after Surgeryr
In 54 patients who underwent spinal surgery experienced pain relief due to TENS unit and thereby had to take fewer painkillers and undergo less of their side effects.
People in different surgeries like heart or lung surgery (which needed a large chest incision) and other surgeries experienced pain relief through the TENS unit.
In addition, they also experienced a return of normal blood pressure and heart rate faster and with fewer medications. Also, they experienced an improvement in breathing.
3. Reduction and Prevention in Migraines
TENS unit has even been found to reduce the duration of migraines in a study. It also has fewer side effects than medications. It has also been found to reduce the number as well as the intensity of migraine episodes in another study.
4. May Fight Depression
A method named as Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation or Tens is a technique of using a TENS unit to stimulate the vagus nerve (this is done by attaching the unit to certain parts of the ear). This method has been found to be very promising in psychological issues like depression by stimulating the parts of the brain related to motivation and reward processing. It also results in remarkable and measurable improvement in the overall level of symptoms in depressed patients.
Plus, a TENS unit has also been found useful in stroke recovery, boost cardiovascular health, reduce menstrual cramps and labor pains, help urinary incontinence, manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and fibromyalgia, improve athletic performance and so on.
So, are you planning to have a TENS unit for you?
