Every year the cold finds its way into our homes to inflict its misery on our families. In my home the kids’ school is usually the epicenter from which it spreads. It seems every January or February in my home the coughing, runny noses and all around low moral sets in. This year I took it upon myself to look for natural remedies to this annual affliction. Below are the top 5 ways to naturally fight the cold.

1. Keep Things Clean

Continually wash your hands. It’s also a good idea to disinfect your kitchen surfaces to prevent gems from growing. You may think that since you are already sick that a few more germs can’t hurt. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Introducing more germs into your body while trying to fight the cold will decrease your immune system’s effectiveness.

2. Stimulate the Immune System

Drink Ginger, lemon and honey tea. Lemon is rich in Vitamin C which helps to boost your immune system. It also packs a large amount of phytochemicals which have anti-bacterial effects in the human body. Mixing honey and ginger is a great expectorant. Expectorants help bring up mucus and other materials from the lungs, bronchi and trachea. It is important to expel this mucus in order to rid the body of a respiratory infection.

3. Hot Showers

Taking hot showers is a great way to relieve sinus pressure and make you feel all around better while you are battling the cold. Part of fighting a sickness is your mental and emotional state. A hot shower is a great way to boost your moral while fighting the cold.

4. Eat Kiwifruit

A Kiwifruit study was conducted by a New Zealand based research company called Plant & Food Research. The study concluded that by eating one Kiwifruit per day will help reduce the duration and severity of the cold symptoms. “While we do not know what compounds produce these results, these findings suggest that eating gold kiwifruit on a regular basis throughout the winter period may reduce the severity of some bold symptoms, says Dr. Denise Hunter.”

5. Rest and Recuperate

Probably the most important thing you can do to fight the cold is to rest. The body needs energy to fight an infection. The less energy you expel the more energy your immune system has to do its work in fighting the cold.
There are a multitude of man made remedies on the market to help you fight the cold such as NyQuil & Tylenol. While these medicines help you feel better, they do come with some side effects. Follow the tips above to help your body naturally fight the annual cold without the side effects of man made chemicals.
