To find your passion in life requires that you follow that path. The Universe will present the trail, you need only look for it and follow it. Wherever you are, you will find the forks in the road. One will take you toward your goal. The other will take you back to where you are.

In 1965, I found a bread crumb trail that took the form of matchbook cover with the words “become a keypunch operator.” I had had no idea that those simple words would take me on an adventure that started at the beginning of the computer age.

The trail that leads you back to what you have always done seems like the safe way to go. It is familiar, comfortable. It does not force you to grow.

To live your passion, you must grow beyond what you thought was possible. The trail will be there. For each step you take, ask yourself if it will take you toward your goal or away. The trick of all this is to look for the smallest crumb: the slightest inkling that this might be toward what you are after.

At other times, perhaps we do not know where we are going. Nothing seems exciting anymore. We have done it all. We have been everywhere. And still, there is that offering of a trail that will stretch your imagination. We need only keep our eyes open and take that risk to take one baby step toward the unknown.

It is also important to remember that you can always turn back. You can always change your mind. As I was driving home from the last day at my last assignment, at just a half-mile from home, I received the call that offered the perfect job that would keep me where I was. It would keep me comfortable. But I had decided that it was time to move on. It was time to create anew. To share with others what I had learned about this bread crumb trail. We saw it in the Wizard of OZ. The road was full of adventure. Full of scary things, too. And still it always led home. All you have to do is think it, and the trail will open before you.

Before you can take that first step down a new road to change where you are headed and to follow the new trail that lies before you, it is important to take a look at where you have been and what is important in the now. You will need to have a dream or a twinkle of a thought in your mind about how it might be. It is this that will allow the bread crumbs to appear.

What strengths have you accumulated along the path of your life so far? What is yours to keep, no matter which road you follow? What have you learned that can allow you to see where the next step will be? Start by making a list of the things that you love and love doing. What do you love that you want to include in each and every day? For me, it is the horses. The horses are part of every decision I make. When I spend all day on the back of a horse or with people who love horses, I am in heaven. Nothing is missing. For you, it does not matter what you choose, as long as it is something you long to do and have enough passion to do it full time.

Once you have decided on the dream, it is time to spend time with those who are a match with what you envision. By surrounding yourself with people for whom the bread crumb trail has turned into a superhighway, the path will begin to open up. So take a good, hard look at those with whom you surround yourself. Determine if they vibrate in harmony with your desire. Those that are in harmony will become your best support network. Do you now know people who care about what you are passionate about? If not, now is the time to go looking for them. Find out where they hang out. Find out what they do in their spare time.

Only you can say no to anything. And only you can say yes. Start to say yes to every opportunity that comes along that may even drop one crumb on the new trail. Many times, we want to be fully prepared before we take a step, and so we never take a first step. Trust that if you do not know, someone does. Trust that you can find the way one bread crumb at a time.
The bread crumbs will show up based entirely on how we think. As long as we think “someday” or “when” or “if,” the trail will always lead to where you are thinking: right back to where you are. You must begin to be the person that has reached her dream. Feel it every day. Ask yourself if each step you take will create the possibility of a step toward that which you want to see, even if it is as small a decision of whether to spend your last dollar on a candy bar or a lottery ticket. That candy bar may feel good in the moment, but it is impossible for it to take you down the trail. At least the lottery ticket holds the possibility! The world we choose to live in arranges itself in a most peculiar way. Many people do not see that they must dream and believe it is coming before the road will begin to open.

Many scientists are beginning to see that the physical world is one large sea of energy that flashes into and out of being in a fraction of a second, over and over again. Nothing is solid. And so it is with the bread crumb trail. The “now you see it, now you don’t” is based entirely on how you are thinking and dreaming in each and every moment. Roads appear and disappear in the blink of a thought. This is the way the world works. It is all yours to create the bread crumb trail to where ever your dreams can take you. Stay focused on the trail of desire, and the road will open step by step in front of you. Be brave, take one step and then another, and pretty soon, you will be speeding down a trail that can only take you where you want to go.

Stop, Look, Listen

Stop. The first step to finding the bread crumb trail is to create the desire. To know, to feel what it is that you would like is critical for the trail to appear. Without a clear vision of where you want to go, you are just feeding the birds. Think about how many of us just feed the birds. We look to others to lead us to where we want to go, but others can only show you the way to where they have chosen to go. We never really believe that we have the power to create for ourselves. Do not be afraid to voice your wildest desire right now. Stop; just say it even if you think no one is listening.

Look. Now begin to look for the signposts that will lead you to the trail. They may be small at first. Really, smaller is better because if we were to see the huge highway to where we want to go, we may never get past the ramp. We might not believe that could possibly be our road. By keeping your desire in the forefront of your mind all the time, you will know at each step if this will take you toward where you want to go. Focus each moment on the crumbs that lead you. Imagine the possibilities, and more crumbs will appear.

Listen. Listen to the words of those around you. Begin to pay attention to their talk. Do their thoughts expressed to you play on your doubts? Do not listen to them. Find those that say you are wonderful. Find those who say wow when you tell them your dreams.

You do not have to be afraid. There is always a step you can take that is small enough to stay comfortable and still be on the path to where you want to go.

My successful career enabled me to follow my passion with animals. With horses always in my life, fate saw fit to send me a very special one in the person of Cadbury. Cadbury was the first son of my prized stallion and precious mare Cherry.

Cadbury was born on my farm and was different from most horses right from the start. He was independent and athletic and bold on the outside but frightened on the inside. Not all horses are born with the same, shall we say, ability to have a conversation with a human. This thought also applies to people in that not all people are equipped with the same skills to have a conversation with each other or with an equine. At the beginning of every new relationship we all bring what we bring—our perceptions, our prejudices, our stereotypes, our fears, and of course, our agendas and egos.

By tapping into my emotions and the fear that was generated by this horse and through the methods of releasing fear, I learned to put the experience of dealing with a difficult animal to work for me and my coaching clients with a unique method of turning off the fear. Baby steps. There is always a baby step. You have just to take one step. Otherwise, the birds will all get the bread crumbs, and you will be left standing where you are now.
