As you would probably expect, working in the field of personal development I get to spend a lot of my time with people talking to them about goal setting and visualisation. I cannot over emphasise the power of positive intention when it comes to manifesting an amazing life, but there is a common trap that too many people fall into while “dreaming their way to success”. One of the most significant developments in my realisation of what true success requires is the notion of being non-attached to the object or outcome of desire.

Sugar coated insults, or backhanded compliments are insults disguised as compliments. Sometimes a backhanded compliment can be inadvertent, other times the intention is to belittle or condescend. “You drive well for a woman!”, “you’re very clean and tidy for a guy”, “wow, you look amazing in that dress, it really hides your tummy!”… most of us have been the target of a sugar coated insult or two in our lives. These can leave us confused, frustrated, even angry, and often not knowing what to do about it.

Habits often have a bad reputation...but some habits can be helpful and healthy. Stop and think about your talents for a moment. What are you not doing that would help you enjoy your talents more, get more done or be more effective? It might be a practice that worked well for you in the past but that you stopped doing for some reason…or it could be a new activity that you’d like to try. (“Gosh, I just read an article about that guy who writes a song a day. I’d love to do something like that!”). It's possible to turn helpful or healthy practices into new habits.

Fear of failure. The words pierce the heart of any creative person. Everyone with talents has experienced doubt and self-doubt. Whether it takes the form of anxiety about the quality of your work -- or terror at the state of your career, fear of failure comes in different flavors and burbles up at different points in the creative process. It can interfere with your creativity, block your progress and instigate creative paralysis.

These are a few of the terms that we normally attribute to a person with an overwhelming sense of entitlement, a belief that they are the center of the universe, and to a person who doesn’t consider how their actions affect anyone else. These individuals will not change unless they choose to. Therefore, understanding them, and knowing how to deal with them is the circle of control you have to work within. If you are on the path of attaining balance and peace in your life, understanding the narcissist is important.

What Are The Symptoms of a Panic Attack? A panic attack generally comes without warning and is described as a sudden feeling of extreme terror or fear. This feeling of terror and panic may or may not be related to a current situation. The intensity of feelings and emotions are not in relation to the situation. You can have a panic attack any time of day or night. Common symptoms you might have during a panic attack are: • "Racing" heart • Feeling weak, faint, or dizzy • Tingling or numbness in the hands and fingers • Sense of terror, of impending doom or death

Why is it important to get into action?-because just doing visualization and positive affirmation isn’t going to attract what we want. It is just hoping that some day it will happen-there is no some day in our calendars! People like to pretend that they don’t have to do anything to attract what they want is an error in their thinking. There is unlimited power in using the positive and negative, balancing it out including using them to something other then fighting each other.

It’s heart-breaking to watch this parade of extremely skilled, high achieving people who beat themselves up unnecessarily. Regardless of the degree of perfectionism, it’s painful. Do you know anyone who makes excuses for why they can’t exercise? Maybe you have been making excuses… According to research published in 2009 by the department of health, 61 % of the Irish population is overweight or obese. The ratio is 29% obese to 32% overweight. That’s a whole lot of people making excuses! Excuses rarely have anything to do with the reality of things, and often have a lot to do with a ridiculous rationalization for why one should stay fat and unhealthy.

A few years ago, I thought that mindset was about 10% of the reason for why one person would succeed, while someone else wouldn't. Then, the more I worked on myself, and the more I worked with clients, the more I thought it was like fifty fifty. Now, I believe that your success is 90% dependent on your internal state of mind. What this means is that you can't make more money, find a job, attract love, lose weight, or whatever it is that you want without first knowing what's getting in the way.

Mindful eating, intuitive eating, and conscious eating are all terms used to describe a way of eating that uses internal cues about hunger, appetite and fullness to guide our relationship with food. Being atuned to and able to listen to our body allows us to know what and when we need to eat. The focus is on learning to eat in a conscious way that helps our body to feel and function well. Dieting, restricting, counting calories or fat grams and focusing on weight are NOT components of mindful eating.

In most homes, school is over, and summertime has begun. On the one hand, most moms feel grateful that warm weather is here, family fun has begun, and the stress of the school year is on hold for the next three months. Forgiveness is a topic that has come up quite a bit lately not only in my practice, but in my personal life. Many people have the mistaken idea that if you forgive someone you say what they did that hurt you was okay. Forgiveness really is about letting go of the negative energy you have around something someone did that hurt you. It's taking back your power and not allowing that person's act to continue to hurt you in the future. Forgiveness is important in our ability to learn, grow and evolve in our lives. Early today I made a comment on Facebook: I tell you one thing you need in order to change your life: you need to be stronger. Straight away, I received comments saying “it’s easier said than done”, and asking “how is one to be strong when things are bad?” It is, easier said than done, and it’s not necessarily an easy thing to be strong when things are not going our way, but I believe you can become a stronger person.

If you are not familiar with the term vision board, let me explain what it is. A vision board is simply a collage of images, quotes and affirmations of your goals and dreams pasted on poster board giving you a visual for what you want to attract into your life. One of my dreams is to be interviewed on the Oprah show!!! So, ideally, I would collect pictures of guests on Oprah's show and insert my picture instead, creating a visible reality for my dream. On our jou ey toward greater awareness, the second step is about finding our identity. At some point in our life, for most of us, there comes a time when we ask the question, "Who am I?" It may not come to us just like that, but it comes in some form or another. The first step in the process of becoming more aware of the answer to that question is about determining who we are not! We discover that we are not defined by what we do. This is often times a reflection of Ego. It is not 100% Ego, but most of us come to a point where too much of what we do is a reflection of Ego.

The words bitch and hoe (short for whore; you can’t spell it “who” because that’s a different word) are tossed around so much that young ladies are no longer offended. Do you know what a bitch is? Webster’s dictionary says that it is a female dog or other carnivorous animal. I guess women could be called carnivorous animals; we eat meat. How unpleasant to be looked at that way, though!

Still, no matter what you do or say, you’re not worth me getting upset or hurt over. You see, like you I have a light that burns within me. It is fueled by my essence. Perception is far more important than reality. My seventeen year-old son James and I were talking about playing tennis this weekend and our focus went to how it feels to hit a tennis ball with the racquet. I described it as similar to swinging a badminton racquet with the strings and the sweet spot removed from the grip by a stem. As I see in the vast majority of my coaching clients, Balance is a Top DaVinci Challenge for multi-talented people. This article is the first in a new series of articles devoted to helping DaVincis create, develop and maintain life balance. Let's begin by taking stock of your current situation. Self-Assessment: How Balanced is your Life?

Have I mentioned that I used to be a dance teacher? Balance was a physical quality back then. Something that all the dancers strived for. Some days it was elusive and their performance would be off the entire class. Other days they felt strong, their steps were clear and precise, and they felt anchored to the Earth. As a life coach, I still haven’t gotten away from balance. So many of my clients -- especially the women -- want balance in their lives. The start feeling frazzled and overwhelmed and balance seems to be the elusive answer.

For decades now guided imagery has proven to be a powerful tool in assisting the body to heal itself from a number of health challenges. It has also proven to be equally powerful in reprogramming the subconscious mind, and freeing us from the negative thoughts, feelings and beliefs contained there. One of the primary benefits of guided imagery is its ability to produce a peaceful and relaxed state of being in the body and in the mind.

In 1996 Elaine Aron created the term “Highly Sensitive Person” or HSP to describe and study a big part of the population (and also higher animals) that has different ways to deal with stimuli, information, thoughts and emotions. This term is neither metaphysical nor spiritual, is very practical and very scientific and has to do with psychology.

Retraining one's brain to respond to the right hunger cue requires an individual to experience pangs of hunger. In other words, one must learn to go hungry. Why? People that have overeating issues often can't distinguish between real hunger and the desire for food. Over the course of time if one has learned to eat for other reasons than being hungry then behaviors are typified through repeated patterns of response to any number of variables. One may eat because it is time to eat. Another may eat because they are reacting to an event and it is a nurturing response.

As I began making some changes in my life, I became increasingly drawn to butterflies. It was as if somewhere deep in my soul I knew that they had much to teach me. I had always appreciated the beauty of butterflies, and seen them as symbols of the new life that God makes possible, but suddenly I was seeing butterflies everywhere and even dreaming about them. Recently, Kara (my wife) surprised me by having a copy of Howard Wasdin’s new book “Seal Team Six’ sent to me from Amazon. I put the book on my “wish list” at Amazon right after the successful Bin Laden operation and Kara was “sweet” enough to have it sent to me. Howard Wasdin (a former Navy Seal sniper on Seal Team Six) was scheduled to release his book this spring and the Bin Laden mission catapulted his book to an instant best-seller. Talk about great timing!

With all the turmoil in the world it’s very easy to get off track or out of balance with one’s life. The truth is, even when there’s little turmoil, it’s still easy to become out of touch with what’s really important in one’s life. So, when experiencing this disconnectedness, how does one get back on track? Or, better yet, how does one keep themselves on track in the face of all the turmoil and stress in the world?

Have you ever felt ,or has anyone ever told you ,that you are “too sensitive”? Perhaps the real problem is that you have not learned to manage your energetic boundaries. Do you feel drained after being in groups of people? Are you a healer that feels exhausted after working on just a few clients? Maybe just being around a coworker who is angry or depressed effects your mood. Learning to strengthen your energetic boundaries could give you more energy and peace in these situations. Resistance is Fertile There are days when my being simmers in a stew full of resistance and I don’t want to do any of the things I’m supposed to do. Nothing feels clearly defined and my thoughts stagnate into a glop of gooey mush. Writing feels like just so many more words. Running feels like an exercise in physical torture and I don’t feel like returning emails. Nothing much seems worth accomplishing on days like that, and nothing feels urgent enough that I can’t simply let it simmer ove ight.

Maybe I should say “give yourself a GOOD talking to”! What’s your inner voice saying to you most of the time? Is it saying: “I’m a truly wonderful human being” or “I am worthwhile” or “I’m always good enough”? I’m guessing that, most of the time, it’s more likely to be “Oh no, I failed again” or “Loser” or “What can I do/say/think in order to be accepted and loved?” I’m not a psychologist, so I can’t tell you why we do it, but as a member of the human race I can vouch for the fact that we definitely do it.

The more you learn about things you're interested in, the more fresh and fun ideas you'll have to mull over in your pursuit of your Core Desires. You'll continually be looking for things to help you be a better parent, salesperson, businessperson, doctor, lawyer, accountant, or PR person. You'll enjoy learning constantly, and you'll discover many benefits.

Low self esteem is a widespread mental affliction; it has reached epidemic proportions. Almost all people carry this “virus.” Few are symptom-free. Typical indications of infection include anxiety, helplessness, depression and addictions to work, food, alcohol, drugs, and dysfunctional relationships (to name a few). In my work as The Thought Dr., I am privileged to get a peek into the minds of people worldwide. Thoughts of worthlessness are more common than we realize. We view our thoughts as our secrets. Few of us disclose to others our anguished beliefs about ourselves.

With so much to learn, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Focus on your Core Desires as a way of defining the direction of your learning. This will allow you to maintain peak interest while collecting information and processing data. If you are learning about things you are not interested in, your enthusiasm will quickly wane.

How is it we endorse a professional athlete, a role model for our children to aspire ... picture perfect being the best at his game, having a beautiful wife and children, all the toys he could ever want; ove ight he went from fame to shame? How is it we trust our priest later learning his 'secret' of molesting children is hidden by the church?

Anyone who knows me knows I am not a fan of winter. Understatement! Come October I turn into a bit of a bear (metaphorically speaking) and all I want to do is hibe ate. Wake me up on the first of May when the earth comes alive; when I can see the world in multicolour, hear the birds sing, feel the warmth of the sun on my face, and I can walk around in shorts and flip-flops! No amount of Halloweens, Christmases or Easters could ever make up for my beloved summer.

Attachment to anyone or anything betrays an underlying belief that there is not enough of the "good stuff" in the world. Being overly attached is a signpost of our fear that we might lose whatever good we tenuously have. But it rarely serves you well to hang on tight, attempting to keep whatever fragment of good is left in a life based on lack. Hanging on too tight constricts the flow of creativity, joy, appreciation, and most especially, peace.

I was 27. I had just passed the bar and was excited about making my first court appearance. It was a whole new world. I was sitting and observing, waiting for my case to be called. I was watching the "pros." Molly Pinkston was one of them. She walked to the podium with the help of a cane. She was in her sixties, with red hair and a blue hat that accentuated her look. I don't remember exactly what she said but it was the way she said it, with her unique phrasing and cadence, that had an effect on me even to this day.

How do you find time to create a little piece of calmness in your world? For me it is mornings. I purposefully wake up an hour before I need to be a wake. This allows me to take the time to getting up, I am not rushed, I get my 15-20 minute shower. I mean how often does that happen ever when you have teenagers in the house. I get to eat breakfast, which we all know is the most important meal of the day, you know. I can make lunch, saving my budget. But most importantly I able able to spend 30 minutes in just being quiet.

It is said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Once you get out of bed why not tell yourself that today is going to be a great day. Talk about some things that you are going to accomplish today. It is so much better to choose to have a great day. Every day is full of little happenings that bring us happiness: getting home form a hard day at work and slouching on the couch, a hug from a partner, a call from a friend… it is the little things that are determining factors in our estate of mind. We need these to minimise the hardships we overcome every day. But do we and should we always rely on these to make us happy? The ability to enjoy the little things in life seems to have become a rather elusive quality. We want more, bigger and better, and we want it now.

Now that the busiest time of the year is over, many people find that they are tired and worn-out from all the hustle and bustle. I was recently asked to introduce a group of teenagers to what Life Coaching is about and after my first session was given feedback from some straight talking young people that my talk and chalk approach was boring. So I went away and revised my presentation. "Productivity" has kind of a bad rep -- it smacks of automation and soullessness. But honestly, do you know of any successful creative person who isn't productive? This past year I’ve thoroughly enjoyed coaching clients starting business ventures. Leaving the Familiar, Embracing the Unknown Martha sits at her desk, dreading yet another day of angry customers, a boss who’s impossible to please, and knows that by the end of the day, she’ll have eaten too many snacks to fill the empty hole within her. “Surely, there must be more to life than this – where’s that feeling of pleasure I used to feel in just doing the best job I could do?” she catches herself asking. As part of your spiritual refinement, you might seek to eliminate the character flaws that affect your life most negatively and to add as many good traits as possible, since all good traits affect your life positively. Only a clear perception of the exquisite worth of your spiritual traits will cause you to rid yourself of your negative habits and cultivate positive ones. The more negative habits you can weed out, the better your life will become. Slim hips, cellulite free and toned thighs, small calves, skinny ankles… When it comes to talking about our legs, we seem to have what we want pretty clear. We all have different body types and are genetically predisposed to store fat in different areas in our bodies. However, studies show there is direct correlation between the type of foods we eat and where in our bodies we store body fat.

As the worldwide economy becomes more strained and the demand for expertise in the workplace increases, people will be relocating from different cultures and countries, in order to provide for their families and establish careers. Individuals will be spending the majority of their waking hours side by side with men and women they wouldn’t normal associate with in social situations.

A few days ago, I was visiting my daughter’s second grade class and the teacher started a discussion about Martin Luther King and the importance of having dreams. The children’s ideas about dreams were interesting, “Being able to make your own decisions,” “Peace in the world, no war,” “Stop cutting down trees to save the environment.” Then the teacher went a step further and gave them a piece of paper to help them create their own “Dream Story Organizer.” I thought I’d share that with you today.

Many busy women overeat when they are stressed, too busy, or overwhelmed. Eating as a way to calm down is a common form of emotional eating. We hear them mention something and suddenly we really want to share with them all of the wisdom we have gained with regards to that subject. We share all we know, and try to get them to commit to following our recommended plan of action for them. Funny, many times they are really not interested in doing that.

How do we move forward? Does anyone have any idea how much potential we have and why we don’t use it? Does anyone have any idea that there is no reason at all left in this world? Does anyone have any idea on how to change this and what it is that we have to change? And one final question do you have any idea why you are not living the life that you want? These are just some of the many questions that must be answered by all of us but most times we don’t really want to know the answer or we think it is too hard to answer.

Statistics show that most toddlers lea how to say about 20 words by 18 months. Talking is easy, ask anyone and they won’t even remember how they started doing it, it just comes naturally. But what might not flow as smoothly as words, is body language. It’s a whole different deal when you’re using your hands, eyes or head instead of your tongue. It can be so easy to look at what is in front of you and say "that's it". Our lives are a reflection of what is happening inside of us and what we think about often. Our life highlights the current limits that we might place on ourselves, or don't. If your current life is reflecting back to you a situation that is not what you are entirely happy with, then look at it, right in the eye and start to vibrate towards that which you want. How do you do that?

In this advanced technical world where most communication is electronic, where you may never even meet your best friend in real life and have a face to face conversation... how do you create a REAL version of yourself. How do you not get caught up in the illusions and exaggeration, how do you live passionately and fully self-expressed?

Many people, especially women, suffer from self-hatred and don’t even realize it. Self-hatred is probably the main cause of low self-esteem and lack of self confidence. Self-hatred also causes obesity, other eating disorders and health issues. Recognizing Self-Hatredr The first step in overcoming self-hatred is recognizing it. Whenever you think or say a negative thought about yourself, such as “I’m ugly”, “I’m too fat”, “I’m not good enough” or “I couldn’t possibly do [insert dream or goal you want to reach here]”, is actually self-hatred.

To truly conquer perfectionism requires a complete overhaul in how you view yourself and others. It may require professional counseling. But rest assured that right here and now, there are some concrete things you can do to alleviate the pain of being a perfectionist. The first step in overcoming perfectionism is to become aware of how it is affecting you. Then you can take concrete steps to address it. First, review the list of Symptoms of Perfectionism described in PART ONE of this article. Are you a perfectionist? Which description(s) sounds most like you?

To what extent are you enjoying your life? If you’re feeling more burdened or stressed than delighted these days, ask yourself: what simple pleasures can you give yourself? And when was the last time you did so? We humans have a curious tendency to find creative ways to deny ourselves simple pleasures. You should hear the convoluted excuses my uber-talented coaching clients devise as to why they couldn't possibly, say, sit outside watching clouds for half an hour. It'd be funny if it weren't so sad that they are denying themselves such basic human treats.

Healthy Coping Skills are: Knowing that we control our own lives: if we have a conflict or failure, we can change the situation. There is no such thing as a mistake. If we learn something from an experience, it is a lesson. If we cannot get what we want, we can make a situation the best it can be. Sometimes we have to accept that a situatio IS the best it can be, even if it means the acceptance of loss and the experience of pain. Pain is temporary; pain passes with time.

Many of you probably read the recent story about the atto ey who sued his law firm, claiming his boss demanded that he attend the ManKind Project’s New Warrior Training Adventure, a weekend workshop for men, and penalized him when he refused. I won’t comment on the merits of the suit, or the specifics of the workshop (I haven’t taken it). PART I - “Pre-Flight Check” What does “taking charge of your life” look like for you? Each of us has different ideas about what that is for us individually. One of the pictures (or visions) we may have when we’ve taken the reigns of our life is success in our relationships, family, business, career, finances, and so on.

Far too many people are trying to do more to be happy instead of trying to be more. Those who seek more peace and happiness in their lives describe what they "do" in a normal day as feeling overwhelmed and unable to get a handle on their lives. When I write the word do on a white board for each activity they perform-from the moment they wake up-within three minutes I have usually written the word do almost a hundred times. When I show them that their day is already full of "do-do" activity, they understand it's time to change the daily cycle that steals their peace and happiness.

Many times we hear people say that they will never get on well in life because they are not from the right side of town. We hear people blame the way that they were reared as a reason for them to repeat the mistakes thrust upon them or worse. But we need to realise that we do not have to let the situations that had control of us in the past have control of us in the future. If you think there are just not enough hours in the day to do everything you need to do, if it often seems as if you are chasing your tail, if you are underperforming, or stressed out, and don't know what to do about it, this could be just what you need. To this day I am always shocked when I discover most of the clients I coach on time management have no organisational systems in place whatsoever. I went from a low income to being in the top 0.5 percent in the nation in earnings in less than two years-and I only have a high school education. As you go about the project of reinventing your life, one key factor is to develop new habits and shed the old ones that no longer serve you. It is difficult to let go of an old habit unless you replace it with a new habit. Get your emotions involved in creating a new habit and you will have a much stronger chance of making that habit fully ingrained in your life. The most important thing in developing a new habit is to be conscious about it. Realize that what you are doing is programming your brain as if you are programming a computer. One of the words that is used a lot in everyday conversation is the word “but.” Usually, it’s considered to be a pretty benign word, or at least that’s my impression given the way in which it’s carelessly bandied about. I mean it’s a fairly small word, seemingly innocuous enough. I think, grammatically-speaking, it would be a conjunction, although I’m not really sure of that, so don’t quote me. Things go wrong, of course, but entrepreneurs don’t call them “failures” they call them “glitches, mistakes, bungles, setbacks” – but not failing. When one such entrepreneur was asked about the hardest decision he ever had to make, he answered that he didn’t know what a hard decision was. An entrepreneur will approach decision-making with the idea that there’s a strong likelihood that he/she will be wrong.

As humans, being rejected is one of our biggest fears. This fear sometimes keeps us from doing things that we want to do, or that we need to do in order to improve our lives. One of the inherent needs we are born with, or that maybe we acquire during out childhood, is the need to be liked and accepted.

As this country is turning more and more to collectivism (where you are part of a group, that has no rights, and that you must sacrifice for others) or are you part of a smaller group fighting to be a individual and staying true to yourself.
