Happy Earth Day 2009

Forty years ago, Earth Day marked the start of the modern environmental movement, but back then it was really considered a kind of hippy event, sort of like a cousin to Woodstock only there was no music. Way back n 1972, only 36 percent of the nations streams were safe for uses such as fishing and swimming. Today though about 60 percent are safe for such uses, so all the attentio
Earth Day brings really has, and continues. to make a difference.

Many buildings or homes which are built to be energy efficient, but not green, can result with some seriously poor indoor air quality because of the tight seal on the homes building envelope. Certain plants can help remove indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene. Golden pothos, English ivy, and peace lilies are all easy to grow toxin fighters.

We are currently in the next baby boom, so all you new Mommies and Daddies should really consider using cloth diapers. There’s even these nifty little cloth diaper holders so you never have to use pins or rubber pants. And if it you’re thinking ick, think about that 1.8 billion disposable diapers are placed in a landfill every year, and those stats are based on before the baby boom started!

Changing your Thinking to Lifecycles (or before, during, and after use) From now on you should start looking at your purchases in terms of lifecycles. From food to clothing, computers to patio furniture and everything else you buy, think about how it’s made, then about the time you will use it, and finally the ease in which you can reuse and/or recycle it once you are done with it. Remember the Earth Day mantra is, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
