Irrational and extreme fears, often recognized as phobias, plague a great portion of the population of the world, and some are more severe than others. While many learn to cope with their particular affliction or avoid the cause of the fear, others find themselves consistently confronted with it and need to find a way to relieve themselves of the fear and its consequences. Hypnotherapy has been successful in remedying a number of phobias without any additional medication or treatment required. How is this possible?

Trained professionals who practice hypnotherapy address a patient with soothing tones and phrases, lulling them into a state of wakefulness that is controlled by their subconscious mind. This opens the individual to a more trustworthy and pliant demeanor, during which time the mind is ready to accept suggestion or divulge information the individual may not be able to access during consciousness.

Often, phobias seem irrational when, in fact, there is an underlying cause that may be buried deep within the expanses of the brain. If the related memory is especially painful or traumatic, it was probably repressed in order to promote self-preservation at a time when the individual was weak. While these memories cannot be accessed by the conscious mind, a professional can draw out the experience through hypnotherapy, when there is no conscious effort to block the memory. Digging in and finding this reason for unmanageable fear is the first step to alleviating it.

Once the memory has been brought to the forefront, the therapist can then concentrate on helping the traumatized individual to work through it, accepting what happened and moving past it. This may take multiple sessions of hypnotherapy, depending on the severity of the phobia and how deeply engraved the traumatic experience is on the mind. The goal is not to erase the bad memory but to make it a part of the conscious mind so that it is accepted as a part of the individual’s past. Eventually, the phobia may either be cured or at least brought under a semblance of control so that the afflicted individual can live a more normal life.

Hypnotherapy is one of the oldest means of treating types of psychosis, as there were not always prescription narcotics to help alleviate stress or control mental conditions. It has proven effective in numerous cases and is trusted by many psychologists as a way to assist individuals who can’t seem to function in daily life due to mental conditions, addictions, or other severe problems. With such practices at our fingertips, it doesn’t make sense to opt for constant medication when the need for such narcotics could be removed entirely by a few sessions of hypnosis.
