The abnormal curving of the spine is typically diagnosed as scoliosis.Normal spines curve slightly to accommodate swift motions. But a person suffering from scoliosis will have too much curvature in their spine that it will closely resemble the letter C or S.

When your spine begins to curve unnaturally, it affects your posture and your ability to go about normal physical activities as the most simple, everyday activities are very dependent on the shape and health of your spine.

Causes and risk factors for Scoliosis:

In most cases, the causes of scoliosis are not known and in medical terms, it is referred to as idiopathic scoliosis, which can be then grouped and categorized into different ages:

1. Infantile scoliosis which affects children aged 3 and below
2. Children scoliosis, which affects kids within 4 to 10 years old
3. Adult scoliosis which affects older children aged 11 to 18 years old.

The condition is more common among girls and the symptoms, specifically the curving of the spine gets worse once they experience their growth spurt.

There are also other types of scoliosis, which include:

1. Neuromuscular scoliosis, typically caused due to failure of the nervous system, which affects muscles like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida and polio.

Recognize the symptoms of scoliosis. A simple back ache, if it’s recurring and constant may actually lead to something more serious:

1. Frequent backache and lower back pain
2. Visible curving of the spine towards one side
3. Uneven hips or shoulder
4. Constant feeling of tiredness in your spine after sitting or standing for a long time

Should you exhibit any of these symptoms, be sure to consult scoliosis specialists who will then conduct a full workup of your spine to determine the level of curvature, spinal curve measurement and do an MRI of your spine.

Most who are diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis will not require extensive treatment, but will need some special care to make sure that the curvature doesn’t worsens. The severity of your scoliosis will be determined by:

1. The cause of Scoliosis
2. The location of the curve of the spine
3. How big the curve is
4. If your body is still moving

For more serious cases, surgeries can help bring back the mobility and flexibility of your spine. Methods such as wearing a brace also helps to relieve the pain. Generally however, chiropractic care is the best non-surgical method available to those who suffer from the condition.
