Baby Boomers have a lot of changes to contend with. There are some pretty major events, especially turning 50 and then the big 60. Plus many are coming up for retirement before too long, but one major event in a family is coming to terms with an empty nest.

Even if you have sometimes wished for the day when you’ll have peace and quiet in your home most parents really dread the time when their children will finally leave home with the intention of not returning to live in the family home again. It may start off on a temporary basis with your offspring leaving to go to college or another town for temporary work. They may return home several times before eventually settling down in their own home. Like many of life’s transitions finding yourself with an empty nest is something that you have to get used to.

Looking on the bright side the chances are the nest may change but it won't be empty for too long. Many will find that it may not be that long before they become grandparents and end up having family times again and the occasional full house once more.

In the meantime you have some choices to make for you. First of all is this home still suitable for you now that there are only one or two occupants or is this is good time to be looking at other options? Have you had a yen to move to another more suitable location but didn't want to do it while your kids were at home? Is this house and garden too big and too much work for you these days? While some people love to putter around the house and garden others would love to give all that up to have a low maintenance home and spend any spare time they have doing other things that they enjoy.

This may be an opportunity to take up some new hobbies and interests. If you’ve always wanted to learn to play golf or pick up your game this could be your chance to catch up with your spouse or friends that may have been playing golf while you’ve been keeping the family home going or working overtime to put your kids through college. If this is something that’s on your mind; do yourself a favour and take advantage of some of the excellent training tools available like the medicus trainer to help you with your golf swing. You’ll soon catch up with the more seasoned players and have more confidence and fun on the golf course.

Maybe that’s not your idea of fun and you would rather take a much needed vacation. Keep in mind now you can choose for you so it’s a great opportunity for you to pick a different type of vacation to the usual family trips of the past. You may want to go to a more luxurious resort and get pampered or you may want to take a cruise or even an adventure vacation like on safari, sailing, or deep sea diving. What have you always wanted to do?

If your thoughts are more about home and you have already decided where you are living works for you at least for now then maybe you want to revamp your home to reflect more of you and your personality. You may choose to redesign, decorate and change your space, maybe change a room or two into hobby or exercise rooms and of course a guest room for your visitors. Adding a feature like an indoor wall fountain to your home space can create a very relaxing ambiance.

Life is forever changing and we do adjust, sometimes it just takes longer than others. The important thing is that we look for the positive in situations and don’t dwell on the negative. The nest may be empty but it’s just the beginning of another phase of life. Enjoy it!
