The nose job is the earliest plastic surgery procedure. Whether performed for reconstructive or cosmetic purposes, it has existed since before the common era. It is understandably one of the most popular procedures today. rnA nose job or rhinoplasty is often concerned with the aesthetics of the nose. A potential patient may have a host of nasal deformities or insecurities. These include an unnaturally wide nose to a dorsal hump on the nose, or a depression or a saddle nose. rnRhinoplasty corrects all these using various techniques depending on the needs of the patient. Suppose the patient has a dorsal hump, the latest Piezotome technology can counter this successfully. This device uses ultrasonic technology to rasp down the dorsal hump if the nasal bone causes it. It targets only the bone, therefore causing no damage to the surrounding soft tissue and cartilage. rnHow is rhinoplasty done? Rhinoplasty, sometimes performed along with septoplasty begins, as all surgeries do, with anaesthesia. This may be administered generally or locally. Then three incisions are done - one in each nostril and one at the base of the nose. The skin is lifted off, and the underlying structure is modified as per the patient’s requests. rnAnaesthesia - General vs Local - How safe is anaesthesia? A lot of patients question the very first step, i.e. the anaesthesia itself. There are many horror stories of people who died due to too much anaesthesia. But what needs to be understood here is that anaesthesia itself is not unsafe. rnRhinoplasty is a surgery. Like any other surgery, it needs a way to dull the nerves. Otherwise, the patient would be in too much pain during the procedure, which not only adversely impacts the results but can also cause lasting mental trauma. Before anaesthesia was developed, people would drink alcohol before surgery to numb their senses. rnThen anaesthesia - a medical miracle - arrived. One of the first recorded usages of anaesthesia was in India, and it was during rhinoplasty. While that was a few hundred years ago, since then, the medicine has greatly improved. But like every treatment, it has risks. rnGeneral anaesthesia is administered to the whole body and puts the patient to sleep. Local anaesthesia targets only the area where the surgery needs to be done. Now, it is true that anaesthesia can cause death. But that’s only if there is malpractice involved. The advancement of this science means that if you have an anesthesiologist who knows what they are doing, there is very little likelihood of anaesthesia causing death. Rest assured, with constant innovations in the field of medicine, anaesthesia, whether general or local, is very safe. You do not have to worry about dying during your nose job surgery due to anaesthesia. rnAlso Check out: Rhinoplasty Surgery (Nose Job): Recovery, Anatomy, Reasons, Technology, How it is Done
