Gingivitis No More
Written by Greg Roberts
Have you ever brushed your teeth and noticed blood on your brush every time you do? An experienced NC Dentist can provide you with meaningful answers regarding this matter. You may have gingivitis; read on and try to understand what you are going through.
North Carolina dentistry practices who specialize in this condition define gingivitis as an inflammation of the gums. The gums tend to bleed and become swollen because of plaque and tartar build up, bacteria and the toxins they produce. The risk of developing gingivitis increases if you have general illness, poor dental hygiene, are pregnant, or have uncontrolled diabetes. Gingivitis can lead to tooth destruction and worse, tooth loss. Gingivitis causes the gum, or the “gingiva” to become inflamed. This, in turn, can bring you tooth decay. This can not only affect the oral cavity but can infect your throat and jaw if left untreated.
Gingivitis ranges from mild to severe cases. When one does not regularly brush the teeth or floss, there is a greater chance of acquiring a severe case. Tartar can only be properly addressed by using state-of-the-art procedures available at the dentist. In NC, the credentials of a dentist can be verified through the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners. Professional tooth cleaning is an important part of good oral health and should be done twice a year. If you are not doing this as a habit, then the chances are greater you will eventually develop gingivitis. Stress, hormonal changes, diseases or disorders, medications, and heredity can all influence whether you develop gingivitis. Preventative measures are the best defense in keeping gingivitis at bay.
In order for you to avoid gingivitis, take the proper preventative measures. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss gently at least once per day. If you are prone to gingivitis, your dentist may recommend brushing and flossing after every meal and before going to bed. It is important to see a dentist for regularly scheduled cleanings every six months and to have the dentist assess your risk of developing gingivitis. Perhaps you need to brush and floss more often but are unaware of this because you haven’t seen a dentist in a while. If it is fear that is keeping you from following up with the dentist, then consider seeing a sedation dentist. Sedation dentists can help you to relax and make the experience more pleasant for you.
Gingivitis is a serious condition that requires you to see your dentist as soon as you start noticing the signs and symptoms associated with it. Do not delay in making an appointment until it is too late. The sooner you address your gingivitis, the easier it will be to get your gums healthy again.
