A tummy tuck surgery is performed to remove excess fat from the abdomen area that otherwise becomes impossible to flatten through any exercise or diet programs.
Sudden weight loss and post pregnancy effects are the main causes which results in the drooping of abdominal skin. Abdominal fat can also be an impact of a previous surgery.

Some people get confused between liposuction and abdominoplasty. However, the two are considerably different from one another. Liposuction is a process that involves the removal of excess fat allowing the skin to shrink. However, a tummy tuck is a serious surgery. It is extensive in nature and involves a lot technical procedures through which the fat and excess skin is removed and the abdominal muscles are tightened.

A tummy tuck surgery is suitable for both men and women who are in good health conditions. However, women who are planning to have a family would have to postpone their tummy tuck due to medical reasons. A patient, after the surgery is advised not to stay alone for atleast 18-24 hours due to general anesthesia used during the surgery.

There are two types of tummy tuck surgery:
1.Full abdominoplasty: In this procedure, there is a cut made in the abdomen from hipbone to hipbone in this procedure, in patients who need maximum correction. The incision is marked within the bikini line. The surgeon then tightens the tissues and the muscles in the lower abdomen and the midline. The skin around the belly button is repositioned. Full abdominoplasty is considered as one of the most extensive surgeries in the field of cosmetic medicine. The surgery takes 1 to 5 hours depending upon the procedures that are involved.

2.Partial or mini abdominoplasty: Some problems and some areas are such that can be resolved though a mini-tuck surgery. They may not need a complete abdominoplasty at all. The doctor understands the patient’s condition and then ascertains the type of surgery the patient requires. A mini tuck needs shorter incision. Unlike the other surgery, in this surgery the navel does not need to be repositioned.
Advantages of mini surgery include faster recovery, lesser surgery time and a smaller mark. Proper diet helps in the recovery process.

If you are thinking of opting for this surgery, you must take time to educate yourself about all the details of the surgery and only then take your decision.

It is advisable that a tummy tuck should be considered as the last option after all other measures of excess fat reduction have been exhausted. It is better to understand that surgery should not be used as an alternative to weight loss.
