Food for Thought: President Trump recently was speculating about how he can eventually earn his way into heaven. He speculated that achieving peace in Ukraine and winning the Nobel Peace Prize might help him get his wish.
I am certain that Christians will welcome with open arms any person who seriously reflects on how to live a life that leads to heaven. We see in the teachings of Jesus "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." We may ask why a rich man has difficulty achieving the kingdom of God. The issue is not the wealth itself, but the attachment to the wealth and the way it is acquired, and the impact it has on others, and the way it is utilized.
Jesus taught to feed the hungry, care for the sick, assist the downtrodden, and treat the stranger as a neighbor. Many rich people acquire with their riches the sense that they can act with impunity, can do whatever they want, and can take advantage of others, climbing over the backs of the downtrodden to achieve their pre-eminent position in this world. The real obstacle then is the mindset that develops alongside the accumulation of great wealth and prestige.
I, for one, welcome the reflection by President Trump on his chances for salvation, and hope that this brings him to study scripture and find a way to turn his remaining time into a blessing for everyone, to truly uplift the meek, the downtrodden and the hungry, to truly work for peace and well being for everyone, and to truly care for the environment so that we are not poisoning ourselves, our neighbors and our children and grandchildren.
Every human being at some point has to face the issues of how to act in the world and how to be a righteous and beneficial force in the world. Those who are given positions of prominence and power have a greater responsibility to use that position for advancing the goals that great religious leaders and visionaries have placed before us. It may take time, it may take long experience doing the 'opposite' but everyone can achieve salvation if they truly tread the path laid out before themselves by their spiritual or religious direction. In the case of Christians, this means following the teaching and guidance of Jesus.
AMEN.
